During the first few weeks of Kindergarten, we have class discussions about rules and expectations. In our community writing the children and myself write some basic safety rules that they brainstorm. The classroom rules are posted for easy reference. This gives students ownership of the rules in the classroom and allows them to think about what we need to have for a learning environment where everyone is safe, respected and focused on learning.
We develop this list together. Once they are completed I will send the list home for you to review with your child. You can keep this posted at home to refer back to frequently.
I use the clothespin chart to promote positive behavior throughout the day. Each child has a clothespin with his/her name on it. The clothespins are attached to a large chart posted in the room which is easily accessible to the children. The chart is divided into six different sections:
Outstanding
Great Job
Ready to Learn
Refocus
Teacher's Choice
Parent Contact
At the beginning of the day each child's clothespin begins on "ready to learn." If a child is doing something that is very good, such as being a good friend, citizen, or giving a really good answer to a question, I will have them move their clip up. If any child is exhibiting opposite behavior of this, they will then be asked to move their clip down. If a child does move their clip down and they change their behavior, they can move their clip back up a section. This approach allows the students to change behavior around and be recognized for it and not stuck in a certain level all day long. Every day, the clips are reset to “Ready to Learn” so the students start fresh.
