The math curriculum that is used is the New York State Common Core Math, as this is what is taught at Indian River. In Kindergarten, there are six math modules that have to be taught by the end of the year. Each Module consist of lessons that are taught everyday (1 lesson per day). Below you can read about what is covered in each module and what math looks like in Kindergarten.
The modules can be found on Engage NY website
Module 1: Count Numbers to 10
Students will learn how to classify and sort objects based on the objects features.
Students will learn how to one-to-one count objects by using their pointer finger. (Touching each object and counting it out loud.)
Recognize and write numerals 0-10.
Understanding what 1 less and 1 more mean. (1 is less than 2. 3 is more than 2.)
Module 2: Two-Dimensional & Three Dimensional Shapes
Students will learn about the flat shapes (Square, Circle, Rectangle, Hexagon, and Triangle) and their features (how many sides & corners).
Students will learn about the solid shapes (cone, sphere, cube, & cylinder) and their features (how many sides and faces).
Students will learn positional words (above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to).
Module 3: Comparison of length, weight, & capacity & Numbers 1-10
Students will learn and understand the vocabulary: shorter than, longer than, taller than, and equal too.
Students will learn and understand the vocabulary: heavier than and lighter than.
Students will learn and understand the vocabulary: more than, less than, and fewer than.
Students will be practicing this vocabulary through measurement activities and comparison activities.
Module 4: Number pairs & adding & subtracting to 10
Students will compose (add) and decompose (subtract) numbers to 10.
Students will use number bonds to learn how to add and subtract numbers.
Students will write number sentences (equations). (2 + 3 = 5)
(5 - 4 = 1)
Module 5: Numbers 10-20 & Count to 100 by ones and tens
Students will recognize and write numbers 11-20.
Students will be able to recognize groups of ten.
Students will also learn about place value. (hundreds, tens, ones)
Module 6: Analyzing, Comparing, and Composing Shapes
Building and drawing flat and solid shapes.
Composing and decomposing flat and solid shapes.
