American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course
is being offered at the Indian River Middle School Pool!
When?
First meeting: Monday March 3rd at 5 pm for Pre-course
Assessment.
After assessment, The course will be held 3/3, 3/4, 3/5, 3/6, 3/10, 3/11, 3/12, 3/13
5 pm - 8:15pm
How Much?
Free for current IR students
$47 All else
(Participants must be 15 years of age on or before the last scheduled session of the course)

For Lifeguarding with waterfront module
Prerequisites Candidates must have:
1. Be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.
2. Jump in, submerge, resurface and swim 350 yards. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
3. Maintain position at the surface for 2 minutes treading water using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
4. Swim 200 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both
5. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
o Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Swim goggles are not allowed.
o Surface dive, feet-first or headfirst, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. o Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath.
o Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
6. Swim 5 yards submerge, and retrieve 3 dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 Ft. of water, resurface and swim another 5 yards
Prerequisites for Lifeguarding only
Swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Swimming on the back or side is not permitted
Swim goggles are allowed
Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
Swim 50 yards using front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both
Timed event
complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds
Starting in the water swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 ft to retrieve a 10 pound object.
Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back returning to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface.
Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Candidates will want to purchase a Rescue mask for the CPR portion of the course.
