This is a very exciting time for science instruction K-12 in the district as New York State has adopted new science standards based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The new standards can be found through the State Education Departments website here. These Standards change the way students approach science shifting instruction towards inquiry-based methods.
Previously New York State's and IRCSD's Science Curriculum was divided into three bands K-4, 5-8 and 9-12. Students were tested by the state at the 4th grade level, at the 8th grade level and then again yearly if they were taking Regents Science Courses. The new standards will cause a shift in NYS testing at the 4th grade and 5th grade levels. Tentatively in the 2020 -2021 school year their will be a new state science test in 5th grade and the final year for the 4th grade NYS Science Exam.
Currently over 40 states in the U.S. have either adopted the NGSS or are reviewing them. Below is a map of the country highlighting the 26 states that are lead partners in the development of the NGSS.
