What are some practical responses, in the moment, to student attitude in the classroom? (i.e.how should you respond to the little things students do that are rude, disrespectful, or just annoying?
When engaging a student that’s creating an issue in class, the first thing to keep in mind is the long game. Use your skills to de- escalate the situation. The goal of the exchange is to emphasize the expectations of the classroom and to promote a positive educational environment for all the students. Disrespectful behavior takes away from the students, the teacher and the whole class.
Engage the student on an individual basis. If there is no traction from the individual conversation, then call home to speak to a guardian about the disrespectful behavior you are encountering.
If the parent contact does not yield a change in behavior then engage the student’s house team.
Your presence is the number one deterrent!
