This year, your child will be introduced to various skills and concepts that will help them develop a strong foundation as a reader. The reading curriculum is divided into four areas through which the skills and concepts will be introduced:
Foundational Skills: understand the organization and basic features of print; understand spoken words, syllables and sounds; apply phonics and word analysis skills in decoding print; read emergent reader texts with purpose and understanding
Reading Literature: retell familiar stories, identify story elements, comparing and contrasting
Reading Informational Texts: identify informational text features, identify reasons an author gives to support points in a text, identify the main topic and key details
Speaking and Listening: participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts
In addition, it is our personal goal that your child will leave Kindergarten filled with a LOVE for books, the JOY of words, and the desire to READ!
