Overview of SEL at Brooks

Our Commitment to SEL: The First 25 Minutes of Each School Day

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

We understand the significance of starting the day on a positive note. Therefore, at Gwendolyn Brooks Elementary, the first 25 minutes of the school day are dedicated to Social-Emotional Learning. This intentional focus allows students to engage in activities, discussions, and exercises that enhance their emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills.

To facilitate this essential aspect of education, we have adopted the 'Second Step' curriculum. This evidence-based program provides developmentally appropriate lessons designed to teach core social-emotional skills, such as empathy, emotion management, problem-solving, and more.

In addition to our SEL efforts, Gwendolyn Brooks Elementary utilizes a Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) system. PBIS is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports needed for all students to achieve social, emotional, and academic success.

As part of our PBIS system, students at Gwendolyn Brooks Elementary have the opportunity to earn 'Tiger Tickets' for demonstrating Safe, Respectful, and Responsible behavior. These tickets serve as tangible recognition of their positive actions. Our students have the opportunity for their Tiger Ticket to get pulled for additional recognition, such as being the ‘Tiger of the Week’ or choosing a prize from our prize bin. Furthermore, the school-wide rewards system celebrates collective achievements and encourages a sense of community and shared responsibility.
