News for September 28th
School Photos- did you take a peek at your child's school photo? A link was emailed to you from VIP. Please let me know ASAP if you would like your child to retake their picture on Friday October 9th.
Book Order- All September orders were delivered last week to those who ordered. This week your child will be bringing home the October order form with a Buy one Get one free coupon. If you are choosing to order this month please do so by October 15th. The link can be found on our class page and above.
ELA- This week we switched from Realistic Fiction to informational text. Our text, Look Both Ways taught us about safety signs in our neighborhood and how to use a crosswalk. We took a walking tour around Brookdale to see all the signs in our neighborhood keeping us safe. Then we even all "Looked Both Ways" and practiced the crosswalk with Mrs. Baldwin. Safety, one of our core pillars.
Writing- Every Monday students use their communication skills to share any news they want to tell the class. Then students write about their news in their journals. It is so fun hearing about hobbies, and interests of our classmates. Monday morning on your way to school, you could help your child prepare by talking about their "news".
Word Study- On Friday we took our first phonics check. We use phonics checks to help us determine if your child is able to apply their letter/sound knowledge to spell words. A phonics check is different from a spelling test. One point is given for each correct letter/sound used when spelling a word. For example, if there are 32 letters then the phonics check is worth 32 points. As these come home throughout the year Celebrate your child’s growth in spelling and note the letter/sounds he/she may need to review at home.
Math- As we learn the meaning of the equal sign, students determined that when adding numbers it doesn't matter the order you do so. You might hear your child call them "flip-flop" facts. Keep supporting your child at home by completin the nightly homework page in the Succeed Workbook. A new October homework calendar will be coming home this week.
Science/Social- How can we be a good neighbor? Students did a great job spotting the good neighbors. Each week we will share how we are being good neighbors around Brookdale. Looking for an activity to do with your family after school, help your child find a way how to be good neighbor. Snap a picture and send it in to share.
SEL- Did you meet Pepito? Your child completed a directed drawing activity and learned how to draw Pepito. This was our performance task to wrap up Unit 1. Students used all the skills from the unit to complete the activity. Ask your child these questions:
What does it mean to focus?
What do you do if there is a distraction?
How do we get better at things that are hard to do?
What does it mean to have helpful thoughts when completing a task or following a direction?

ELA- We read a story about a boy named Henry who likes to ride his bike around the block. Along the way he stops at many spots in his neighborhood. The story Henry On Wheels was another example of realistic fiction. We focussed on understanding the settings ( Time and Place) of a story.
Writing- We continue to review letter formation. It is important for students to remember to start ALL letters at the top of the letter. We are working hard to break the bad habit many students are showing by starting at the bottom of the letter. While it seems like a small thing, it makes a big differnece for writing fluency. Our focus is not on penmanship but rather getting more ideas on paper. If our brain is spending so much energy on remembering how to write a letter , how can the brain think about how to spell words or add details.
Word Study- Short vowels are the focus for unit 1. Students are reviewing consonant sounds while spelling words with short a and short i. Each week students have word families that we focus on. Most recently, words spelled with -ip .
Math- In math two strategies we relied on this past week was counting sticks (our fingers) and counting on (dot visuals). Please know that using fingers as a math tool is completely age appropriate and should not be discouraged. However we do hope that students move to counting on from a number they hold in their head. Look at the anchor chart to the right.
Science/Social- It is important to remember that we can learn from each other. Students did a search in the room to find others talents and interests. The activity builds our classroom family at the same time building our communication skills!
SEL- Mateo and Pepito are characters helping us reach many goals. This past week we learned the dance " Hand Jive". Ask your student to show you the dance.
The goals of this unit include students being able to:
Pay attention while learning something new (for example, turning towards the speaker, watching and listening carefully, not talking)
Behave in ways that help them manage distractions (for example, changing places, taking deep breaths, reminding themselves to pay attention)
Practice and try again in order to improve a new skill
Use helpful thoughts to encourage themselves when they make a mistake
Week of September 8th
Fun Run- Have you registered for the Fun Run? It will be great fun on Friday September 25th outside running , eating, dancing and having a party. The last time I looked Mrs. Tinman's class was in the lead to win the grand prize. There are lots of class incentives for our class to still earn.. Let's see if we can catch 1T! Click the link above to join the fun run.
Book Club Order- Looking to build a home library at home without spending a lot of money? Checkout Scholastic Books- Students brought home a flyer showing the covers of some of their favorite books. You can order here and the books will be sent to school and I will then deliver them to your student. We love books!
ELA- Students have been introduced to realistic fiction with the read together story, The Blackout. Each week there is a "read together story" and a "foundational story". The foundational story is decodable and meant for all readers to try and read independently. At the end of each week students will bring home a packet with the stories stapled together. Many pages will be completed together in class so they look blank in your child's packet. These stories and blank pages offer great reading and spelling pracice. for your child to try at home.
Writing- As we launch our writing routines the goal is to have students take a risk and write. The goal is to build our writing stamina and take risks spelling words. Don't let spelling get in the way of a great story.
Word Study-Students were introduced to our say it, tap it, map it, write it routine. Using sound boxes helps students encode words by writing one sound in each box. If they ask you to spell a word, tell them to say it then tap it. last write it.
Math- We have now learned all the ways to make 6-7-8-9 & 10. The goal is to know all of these cominations/facts fluently by the end of the school year. Throughout the year we will play many games to help build our math fluency.
Science/Social- Our civics unit reminds us that schools have rules and that we can all learn from one another. Our social studies curriculum has many group actities that are completed in class after we read the text. Students have now brought home several packets with the pages ripped out from our social studies book. These packets serve as another resurces for families to suppor their student at home.
SEL- We defined the work distraction and challenge. The next step is to learn how we can overcome challenges and ignore distractions to help us learn. At times 1B is very chatty. The good thing is they are all very kind!!!
