Week of August 24th
Curriculum Night- Thanks again for your support this school year. I thought I would link the curriculum night slides here and on our class home page in case you need to reference them.
ELA- Pigeon Has to go to School- what a fun book to talk about why we read. This week we focused on "why" we read. To laugh- To learn - To Wonder - To Relax
Writing- We continue to review our handwriting routines. It is important for our brain to have automaticity writng letters so our brain power can focus on what we want to write.
Word Study- There are several locations a sound can be heard, At the beginning, middle and end of a word. As we review sounds students listen and identify where they hear the sound.
Math- We started Module 1 - throughout this unit students will compose and decompose numbers. Think -part -part -total. One math tool that is used daily in math is the number bond.
Science/Social- Students were engineers and created two different ways to get Pigeon to school. One was a catapult and the other was a zipline. Throughtout the process, students learned about levers, fulcrums and friction.
SEL- What does it mean to "pay attention". We did several activities to see how paying attention makes a difference in how successful we are. We connected it to the story Swimmy. The fish all swim together to a form one big fish to live and avoid the large tuna fish. Our class needs to do the same, follow the group plan so we all can learn together.
Week of August 17th
ELA- We read so many stories this week. Most centered around our classroom theme of the ocean. One importatnt book was Our Classr is a Family.
Writing- Understanding the three lines on the paper are key to our handwriting. We reviewed the lines and were reminded that EVERY letter starts at the top of the letter and sits on the bottom line.
Word Study- Have you ever seen an alphabet arc. Students entering first grade should know all their letters both capital and lowercase including the sound of each letter. Need some practice at home. Have your child sort the letters on this arc and say the sounds as they move the letters.
Math- Counting Circle- throughout the year the class will stand in a circle and we will complete various cooutning patterns. We continue our counting pattern until there is one student left.
Science/Social- We learned a little bit about how pencils are made. Then students were given an enginerring (STEAM) challenge to build a tower of pencils with a partner.
SEL- We met Snaily and Puppy. These two puppets will help us learn our socail emotional curriculum. Our first unit will focus on a growth mind set and goal setting.
