'Iolani Stage Bands
The 'Iolani Stage Bands have students usually ranging from 8th-12th grade and are assembled by skill level. These jazz ensembles learn how to play the many different styles of jazz, improvise, and perform for some of 'Iolani's high profile events. In addition to our Stage Bands, we also have the Tam-Young Jazz Combo, which is an after school small jazz group for selected students. We host our jazz festival, the 'Iolani Big Band Bash, every year that features schools from around the island as well as world renowned jazz musicians and educators.
The 'Iolani Stage Bands have traveled around the world earning recognition from renowned jazz educators and musicians. Our bands have performed in Japan, Germany, New York, New Orleans, Texas, Washington D.C., the Czech Republic, and more.
Every year, we bring in guest musicians and educatos to work closely with, and even perform with, our students. Past guest artists include Eric Miyashiro, Denis DiBlasio, Gerald Clayton, Ira Nepus, Andy Martin, Bobby Shew, Jimmy Borges, and more.
