Ensembles

Our upper school band ensembles are skill-based. Students are placed in an ensemble based on their skill level, but also where the directors feel the student will thrive. Instrumentation of the ensemble also plays a factor into the decision. Every ensemble requires instructor approval every year. It is possible to be enrolled in more than one ensemble!

Beginning Band

1st year player, or continuation from Lower School Beginning Band (please see the LS Band page).
Typically 7th-8th grade.
Usually a prerequisite for Stage Band (horn players only)
Concert band setting

Intermediate Band

2nd year+ player or continuation from Beginning Band or Lower School Band
Typically 7th-9th grade
Usually a prerequisite for Stage Band (horn players only)
Concert band setting

rhythm section fundamentals

Prerequisite to enter Stage Bands for piano, bass, guitar, and drums.
Rhythm section instruments learn how to play in a jazz setting and read jazz music.
Typically 7-10 graders
Some experience on the instrument required, but this is still considered a beginner friendly class!

Stage Band 2

Open to trumpet, trombone, saxophone, drum set, guitar, bass, piano, and vocal students
2 year+ player
No jazz experience needed!
Rhythm Section Fundamentals prerequisite (drums, bass, guitar, piano) and Intermediate Band or equivalent level prequisite (trumpet, trombone, saxophone)
Open to grades 7-12
This is a year class

Stage Band 3

Open to trumpet, trombone, saxophone, drum set, guitar, bass, piano, and vocal students
3 year+ player
No jazz experience needed, but students placed in this group often have previous jazz experience
Rhythm Section Fundamentals prerequisite (drums, bass, guitar, piano) and Intermediate Band or equivalent level prerequisite (trumpet, trombone, saxophone)
Open to grades 7-12. Once at this level, students normally repeat the class until grade 12

concert Band

2 year+ player
This is a 1st semester class
Mostly grades 9-12, but some grade 8 eligible by instructor approval based on ability

marching Band

2 year+ player
Only open to high schoolers
This is a 1st semester class
Rehearsals and band camp begin in mid July

Symphonic Band

3rd year+ player
Typically grades 9-12
Some grade 8 eligible by instructor approval based on ability
This is a 2nd semester class
Concert band setting

Wind Ensemble

3rd year+ player
Typically grades 9-12 mostly consisting of upper class-men. Once at this level, students normally repeat course till grade 12.
Some grade 8 eligible by instructor approval based on ability and instrumentation needs of the ensemble.
