There were three conditions to select a community project. It should be community-oriented, achievable, and purposeful. We also added a new condition, which was to have fun doing it.
Our Community Action Goal is based upon the idea of raising awareness about drought in our high school and also contributing to saving water in our high school community. We also wanted to know more about cultural issues related to water.
We have brainstormed about different options. It was difficult to choose a project that we all liked and were able to commit to. So, we have decided to do three micro-projects.
The first one was the cultural project. We aimed to learn more about our national heritage in Mataró and explore the water distribution towers and other architectonic elements related to water. Additionally, we were very interested in how the concept of water could be expressed in a mandala, since water itself is a very relaxing concept. Moreover, we wanted to explore how other cultures practise the ritual of calling for rain or rainmaking by performing dances.
The second goal was to answer to the ban of not watering our orchard due to the emergency situation we were in. To resolve the problem, we decided to collect rainwater with our own technological mechanisms and save it to continue watering our orchard.
Finally, we wanted to raise awareness in our high school and promote measures to save water in the high school and at home by explaining to younger kids about the drought alert situation.
To work effectively, we divided ourselves into five working teams:
Tasks of the Water Mandala team: Research about mandalas and how water calm people down, prepare a presentation and create an original water mandala, paint it and organise an exhibition in the high school.
Tasks of the Rainmaking Ritual team: Research about rainmaking dances and rituals worldwide, prepare a presentation and create an original choreography to call for rain.
Tasks of the Water Tower Design team: Research about water distribution tower systems in Mataró and reproduce some of these water towers by either handcrafting them with recycled materials or printing them out with the help of drawing programs and our 3D printer.
Tasks of the Saving the Orchard team: Find out in which spots we can collect water in the high school and ideate a mechanism to collect this water and use it to water the orchard, since due to the drought we were not allowed to water it.
Tasks of the Raising Awareness team: Design and create leaflets and presentations about water saving in our high school and talk other students personally about the consequences of the drought situation.
