There were three conditions to select a community project. It should be community-oriented, achievable, and purposeful. We also added a new condition that was to have fun doing it.
Our Community Action Goal is based upon the idea of raising awareness about food waste in our high school and also promoting good healthy breakfast habits in our high school community. These goals came out from the survey we conducted about the local consumption issues that worried students the most and the potential actions students were willing to undertake to improve food security.
To achieve our goals we decided to first design games to share with our high schoolmates so that they would get more familiar with food security issues. We understood the games as a kind of escape room and used the program Scratch to create them. By playing these games during the English class, students got access codes to finally participate in a MasterChef contest in which they had to cook and present the healthiest, most suitable for a teenager, and most sustainable breakfast.
To work effectively, we divided ourselves into four groups: advertising and raising awareness, organisation of the contest, and design and programming of the games. Additionally, we all participated in a fourth reporting and communication team.
Tasks of the Advertising team: organizing the raising awareness campaign by designing posters for the contest, producing a video explaining the project, and creating logos.
Tasks of the Organising team: Coming up with the idea of the contest, selecting the jury, collecting data for the students' vote, choosing the venue for the contest, booking the location, arranging calendars, and conducting the contest.
Tasks of the Game programming team: organizing the raising awareness campaign by designing posters for the contest, producing a video explaining the project, and creating logos.
Tasks of the Reporting and Communication team: gathering and sharing information, taking pictures, posting on the Global Scholars platform, and making this website about the project.
