For this project I made a chill, laid back track using the Double Drums technique. I started by setting up two drum kits, one acoustic and one electronic, and panned them hard left and right so they each had their own space in the mix. I made sure the two kits had contrasting beats so they wouldn't just sound like the same thing doubled. Then I added two synth tracks with chord clips, panned medium left and right. I put an arpeggiator on the second synth which gave the track a more flowing, relaxed feel that matched the vibe I was going for. I also added a melody track and an elemental sound effect track, panned soft left and right to fill out the stereo field without being too aggressive. For the mix I used send/returns to add reverb and delay which really helped everything feel more spacious and tied together.
The biggest thing I learned from this project was how much panning affects the way a song feels. Before this I never really thought about it but spreading the sounds across the stereo field made the track sound way more professional and full. I also learned how useful the arpeggiator is for creating movement without having to manually write out a melody. Working in the arrangement view was a little tricky at first but once I got the hang of switching between session and arrangement it made sense. Overall I'm pretty happy with how the track came out and I feel like I understand the mixing process a lot better now.
