This half term, our topic is Identity & Diversity. We will be exploring how we can make friends and accept others.
This term, we will be focusing on learning how to write sentences that make sense. We will be practising skills such as rehearsing sentences before writing them down, using conjunctions to extend sentences, sequencing events and sharing ideas to help us to generate sentences. Throughout our learning, we will also practise using full stops, capital letters, finger spaces and letter formation.
We will then be reading two texts. The first is, 'My shadow is Pink'. We will identify our own likes and dislikes and compare these with our friends. and then write a poem about this.
The second text is, 'The Lonely Beast'. We will create a character description of the beast's appearance and what it likes to do. To do this we will further explore nouns and verbs and also use adjectives. We will then sequence the events of the narrative, identifying the features (the beginning, the build up, the problem and the resolution/ending) to create a story map with key vocabulary. We will write our own narrative retelling the story of the lonely beast.
In history, we will understand the difference between the past and the present. We will learn to ask questions, by exploring toys and pictures, comparing similarities and differences.
In maths this half term we will be learning the place value of numbers up to 10 and 20. In our practical lessons we will be sorting, identifying, comparing and ordering numbers using various resources. We will also be learning to use language such as fewer than, equal to and more than, and how to recognise numbers with words.
In science this half term, we are going to be learning about every day materials and their properties. We will be learning how to identify different types of materials and sort them into different groups. We will apply our knowledge to build a boat.
In art we will look at the work of Rapael Lopez. The children will experiment with different mediums and then design a repeating pattern, which they will print onto different surfaces.
We will have 2 phonics each day following the Little Wandle programme. One session will be in class recapping phase 3 and moving on to phase 4. For the other session the children will be grouped into phase groups.
The reading is linked to the Little Wandle phonic programme. We will be reading a phonics book in class focusing on fluency, prosody (expression) and comprehension. Children will then bring home the book we read at school. Spelling will be focused on the tricky words and words containing the sounds we learn in phonic sessions.
In RE, we will be exploring what it means to be thankful. We will learn how people thank God and how religious people celebrate Harvest.
In R.S.H.E we will be focussing on relationships. We will discuss families, friendships and what characteristics make a positive one, We will explore how to recognise other people's emotions, explore feelings we may have when working with others, and recognise that friendships have problems that can be overcome.
In P.E. we are learning to balance and travel using a combination of body parts. We will combine balance and travelling actions to make a sequence. We will also learn to combine hanging, swinging, travelling and jumping on different apparatus.

In English this half term, we will be focusing on our core text, 'Little Red Riding Hood' by Lari Do. We will be sequencing pictures, exploring a character's appearance and personality to retell the narrative, before moving on to write a diary entry as if we were Little red riding hood. We will be exploring the features of a diary entry, such as past tense, emotive language and noun phrases.
In geography, we will be exploring the 4 countries that make up the United Kingdom along with their capital cities. We will then identify where the UK is in relation to the rest of the world, before focusing on our town of Croydon. Year 1 will define what is meant by a human and physical feature, picking out examples found in Croydon.
In maths this half term we will be learning our number bonds within and to 10, building up to our number families to 20. We will explore the various ways we can make the numbers to 10, using addition and subtraction. Later on in the term, we will begin exploring a range of 2D shapes and 3D shapes, using them to recognise patterns.
In science this half term, we are going to be learning about the different 4 seasons; winter, spring, summer and autumn. Year 1 will then use their knowledge of materials from the previous term, to investigate what materials would best be suited to create a shelter, thinking about what season it is at the time but also how the material might change depending on the weather changes.
In DT, we will be linking our DT learning with our science lessons, building to create a 3D model of a building. We will be exploring the different structures of a building, discussing how each material is suitable. Year 1 will then design and create their own 3D building using a range of materials.
In phonics, we follow the Little Wandle scheme which is linked to our reading. We will continue reviewing phase 3 and then we will move on to phase 4 and 5.
The reading and spellings are linked to the children's Little Wandle phonic programme. They will be bringing home a book relating to the sounds they've been learning during the week.
In RE, we will be exploring Christianity, in particular the religious stories found in the Bible. We will look where and when Christians prayer but also discuss the importance of it and how it may change their daily routines.
In R.S.H.E we will be focusing on our emotions and how we can regulate our emotions using a range of techniques. We will then move on to the importance of staying healthy, exploring hygiene and healthy and unhealthy foods.
In P.E. we will continue to practice our balancing skills alongside how to jump and land safely. We will then move on to learn how to throwing various items at a specific target and practice how to catch a ball correctly, focusing on their hand-eye co-ordination.
This term, we will explore how we can make decisions based on what is right and what is wrong.
In English, this term we will be reading a book called The King Who Banned the Dark. We will be continuing to learn how to use descriptive writing skills to describe characters and settings. Our final writing outcome will be a recount of the story.
In history, we will be learning about the leaders of our country. We will be learning about the monarchy and about who governs the country. We will be using a timeline to arrange the events of King Charles' III life.
In maths, we will be learning the place value of numbers to 20. We will be focusing on how to compare numbers; how to make number bonds up to 20; and ordering numbers. We will also be learning how to explain our reasoning using key vocabulary when solving mathematical calculations and problems.
In science, we will be learning about animals including humans. We will be identifying living and non-living things. We will be comparing, grouping and classifying animals based on what they eat and their characteristics.
In art, the children will learn about the artist Stephen Wright who will be our inspiration for this term. We will be learning skills such as observational drawing and using mixed media of colour and texture to create mosaic crowns.
We will continue following the Little Wandle scheme and learning phase 5 sounds. Children will be grouped according to their ability and will be provided catch-up phonics interventions.
Reading books and spellings are linked to the Little Wandle phonic programme. Each child will bring home a book relating to the sounds they have been learning during the week.
In RE, we will be learning about the founders and leaders in religions such Islam, Hinduism, Christianity and Judaism. Throughout this unit, we will learn how the skills and qualities of these leaders show us what it means to be a good leader.
In R.S.H.E. we will be learning about the importance to take care of others. We will be talking about how to care for animals and what are the needs of babies and younger children. We will also be learning about our differences and similarities.
In PE, we will be learning the multi skills using a ball. We will be focusing on agility, balance and co-ordination. We will be learning how to dribble, kick and pass a ball.
This term, we will explore how we can make decisions based on what is right and what is wrong.
This term in English, we are learning about the text Beegu. The children have learnt to use empathy as well as building on other skills such as superlatives to help with writing our innovative narrative about Beegu landing on a farm.
Our second core text is Grandad's Island. We will explore the story setting, actions of the characters and their feelings. Using suffixes, past tense verbs and superlatives to then write our final outcome of a diary entry.
This half term we will be learning about the countries that make up the UK. We will find out the difference between a sea an an ocean and identift the waters around the UK. Then we will spend a week on each of the 4 countries learning about the flag, the symbol and traditions of each country. We will also enjoy tasting some food from each country!
We will continue to learn about measure thinking about mass, volume and capacity. We will do some practical work measuring objects in the class room and compare objects. We will learn about counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Then we will move onto multiplication and division learning about arrays and how to share objects into equal groups.
This term in Science, the children are learning about the human body and its association with the senses. They are exploring how our senses help us understand the world around us.
Our next topic will focus on how humans and animals change during the spring season, observing the ways in which nature transforms during this time of year.
We will be looking at moving parts in books such as sliders and levers. We will identify that they can move in straight lines, in a curve or round and round and will identify the pivot needed to make levers work.
We will practise making each of the mechanisms then use our knowledge to design and create a picture with a moving part which we will link to our core text.
We will continue to have phonic sessions every day. Children will be given support relevant to their phonic phase using the rapid catch-up Little Wandle programme. We will be learning the phase 5 sounds and growing the code (the same sound can be made by different graphemes).
Children will be encouraged to use their phonic knowledge to support their spelling in all their writing. We will continue to learn and practise the tricky words from phases 2 to 5.
Reading sessions will focus on three areas - fluency (using phonics to read the words) prosody (using expression) and comprehension (understanding what we have read).
In RE, the children are learning about the importance of religious stories as life stories and how stories help us to live our lives. Through these lessons, they are exploring the values and lessons embedded in different religious narratives and understanding how they can apply them in their own lives.
In PSHE we will continue to learn about keeping safe thinking about how to keep safe at home. We will think about why we have rules and apply this to school. Then we will consider the needs of others and think about belonging and how people are the same and different.
This term in PE, the children are learning how to jump and land with their feet together. They are developing their coordination and balance through a range of activities designed to enhance their movement skills.
During Summer 1, the learning will be based around the global theme of Sustainable Development. The focus of the term is to explore how we can look after our planet.
Our core texts this half term are The Secret Garden and Dear Greenpeace. For the first few weeks we will be looking at the features of a letter and writing our own letter.
Then we look at The Secret Garden which is about a girl who create a garden in the neglected space. We will link our writing to science and write instructions on how to plant and care for seeds and plants, then create an information leaflet.
In geography this term we are learning about the geographical features of rural and urban areas. We will be comparing the differences and looking at the features in our local area. We will also be learning about the impact of pollution on our environment.
Children will be introduced to simple fractions, with a focus on halves and quarters. They will learn to recognise, find, and name halves and quarters of shapes, objects, and quantities through hands-on activities and practical experiences.
We will explore position and turns, using everyday language to describe movement and direction. Children will learn to recognise and describe quarter, half, and full turns, and will begin to use mathematical vocabulary such as clockwise, anti-clockwise, left, and right.
As we progress through the term, we will be deepening our understanding of place value, extending our work with numbers up to 100. This includes recognising and ordering numbers, counting forwards and backwards, and understanding tens and ones.
In science we will be busy learning about plants and what they need to grow. We will be planting some seeds and will be caring for them to help them grow. We will also be learning about the life cycle of a plant.
We will be weaving a blanket for a whale using recycled materials. We will discuss the properties a blanket needs and decide which materials would be best to use. We will practise different types of weaving then design and create our final outcome.
We will continue to have two sessions of phonics every day: one session as a class working on the phase 5 sounds and words, and the other session splitting into phase groups.
Reading sessions will take place three times a week. Each session will have a different focus. One focuses on decoding and reading the text. The next day we focus on prosody and children practise reading using expression. The final session focuses on comprehension, answering questions about the text to show our understanding.
Spelling work takes place in phonics and during writing. We focus on spelling tricky words correctly and using our phonic knowledge to spell words.
We will be finding out about the Hindu religion this half-term. We will explore their beliefs, how they pray, where they worship, their holy text and important symbols. We will think about what things are special to us at home and how we look after them and what we do to celebrate.
This term learning focus is on being safe online as well as relationships.
During Summer 2, the learning will be based around the global theme of Sustainable Development. The focus of the term is to explore how we can look after our planet.
In English we will be continuing to learning about pollution in the ocean and will be using our knowledge to write a fact file. We will look at lots of different examples of fact files and highlight the features. We will then write our own fact file.
We will also be learning about narratives. We will learn about the features of narratives and make a story map of our core text, Tidy. We will explore the characters and their emotions in the story through role play. We will then plan and write our own narrative. Once we have finished writing we will edit and publish our story.
This term we have a history focus, and will be looking at how things have changed over time. We will discuss the language of past and present, and then look at events from our own past and order them. We will identify similarities and differences between objects from the past and present and group them. We will also look at the history of Woodside School and find out how it has changed. Finally, we will look at our local area to see how this has changed.
For the next couple weeks we will be embedding our knowledge of place value of numbers up to 100. We will be learning how to compare numbers, add or subtract 1 number from a two-digit number, use the number line and partition the numbers into tens and ones. Then we will move on to learning about money and how to recognise various coins and notes. After that we will be learning all about time: the days of the week and months of the year then moving on to telling the time to an hour and half hour.
Science this term focuses on the weather. We will be looking at seasonal weather recognising that we are in summer and that summer has the highest temperatures and longest hours of daylight. We will record the weather over a few weeks and analyse our results and discuss how to stay safe in the sun. We will compare our weather to other countries to see if the weather is different in parts of the world.
We will be having a DT week in the first week of term. Year 1 will make fruit salad. Before actually making the salad, we will investigate and taste different fruits. Then we will select which ones we would like to put in our salad, discuss food hygiene and practise how to use a knife safely.
In art we will be exploring sculpture and look at the work of the Washed Ashore Project. We will create our own sculpture of a jellyfish using recyclable materials found at home or in school.

We will continue learning about the religion of Hinduism. We will be learning about the special story of Rama and Sita then we will be learning about a special festival that Hindu people celebrate.
This term we will be focusing on professions and what jobs people do. We will be learning why each job is important in our community and what strengths and interests are needed for a particular job.
