This half term, our topic is Identity and Diversity. We will focus on our sense of identity and our community.
Our core text is 'Happy to be me' by Emma Dodd. We will use it to learn about ourselves, our senses, our likes and dislikes. We will also learn about our differences and about things that are the same about us. Children will begin to recognise the initials of their first names or familiar logos. Children will be adding some marks to their drawings, which they will give meaning to. For example: “That says mummy.” They will make marks on their picture to stand for their name. Children will use high quality vocabulary through use of pictures and images. Children will be introduced to simple sentences to describe their facial features.
Children in Nursery will be learning how to express themselves following modelling by adults. They will begin to put more than two words together to form simple sentences they can use during their play and focused learning. Children will be introduced to sentence stems, new vocabulary linked to the topic for the term through use of Widgit symbols and images. Children will also learn how to answer simple 'what and where' questions.
In Maths this half term, we will focus on:
Ordinality of numbers - sequencing numbers 1-5 through rhymes and games.
Cardinality of numbers - quantity of objects through use of our fingers and body actions.
2D shapes - identifying 2D shapes and using the shapes for a purpose.
Children will be using large-muscle movements paint and make marks. For fine motor skills, children will use different writing instruments. Children will be using bikes in the outdoor area for gross motor skills. Children will also begin learning how to put their coats on as the weather changes, wash their hands after using the toilet with support and explore the entire Nursery indoor and outdoors.

This half term, our topic is Identity and Diversity. We will continue to focus on our sense of identity with a focus on families.
Our core text 'We are Family' by Patricia Hegarty. We will read this text as we focus on families, how different they are and how similar they are. We will also be looking at roles and responsibilities in families, celebrations, festivals and food. We will get to talk about where some families live and how we keep in touch with them. As families are different, there are certain things that Nursery children do which are the same. An example of this is coming to Nursery, going to the park during the weekend. Children will have a chance to talk about their families and express their opinions on how their families live. Children will also taste food from different cultures and dress up to celebrate the uniqueness of each culture represented in the classroom. Nursery children will also talk about the jobs their grown ups do.
As we will be learning about families, children will listen to others as they talk about their families. They will be taking turns to express their views on the differences and similarities in number of family members, number of pets, grandparents, celebrations and festivals. They will continue building up their vocabulary linked to topic through carpet and free flow sessions. Children will also learn how to answer simple 'who', 'when' and where' questions and in context. Children will also be encouraged to use learnt vocabulary and speak in full simple sentences such as, 'I have .. 'or 'my family...' Nursery children will begin to learn about how to take turns with 'talk partner.'
In Maths , we will focus on:

Measurement-Weight- using mathematical language to describe weight

Our core text, 'We are Family', will support children to share things they do with their families without the need of doing the same things e.g going on holiday or getting a new toy. Children will be supported to use the zones of regulation to express their feelings. The Good to be Green will support with managing behaviour and stopping unwanted behaviour linked to the school's behaviour policy.
Children will be using a lot of natural resources such as autumn leaves, sticks, pine cones and acorns to create families including animal families. 'Stickman' story will be used to support their creative skills. Children will use well known nursery rhymes to form their own lyrics using known tunes. They will learn to express themselves through art, songs and dances.
As the children are now more settled, our focus on gross motor skills will be to continue to develop their movement, balancing, riding (scooters, trikes and bikes) and ball skills. A variety of games will be introduced to support children with their hoping, skipping and collaboration skill. For fine motor skills, we will be working on increasing their independence around putting on their coats themselves. We will also encourage children to use one handed tools such as scissors to cut. Children will be supervised as they use any sharp tools.
Our focus will be on Foundations for Phonics which is part of Little Wandle, using rhymes and stories. They will be planned activities linked to the rhymes which will support children's understanding to be able to respond to questions such as, "Where was the spider? in Incy Wincy Spider. Environmental sounds will also be done in small groups. Children will also be involved in games to support their blending skills.

This half term, our topic is You Choose . We will focus on having a voice to make choices.
Nursery's core-text for this term is 'You Choose' by Nick Sharrat. The core-text will support children to understand that they have choices and can use their voices to make the choices. Children will use 'You Choose' to learn about making choices on how they dress up, what to eat, and their favourite activities. Nursery children will use their imagination about where they would like to live , how they would get there and what their favourite pets would be. Children will also talk about how people celebrate special events linking this with the Chinese New Year.
Children in Nursery will use new vocabulary linked to making choices. Children will participate in small groups, class and one-to-one discussions, expressing their own opinions, using recently introduced vocabulary. They will use learnt vocabulary to make choices. Children will continue to use sentence stems to be able to speak in full sentences with adult modelling. Children will be supported in learning the new vocabulary through use of images and widgits.
In maths, children will be learning to identify and count accurately numerals 1-5. Children will continue to subitise quantity up to 5 using objects, picture cards and items that can be counted. In subitising children will learn to identify quantity without counting but noticing patterns. Nursery children will also learn about non standard measurement focusing on length. They will estimate how long the 3 bears' footprints are and how long the beanstalk is. Number blocks will be used to support the counting accurate skill.
This half term in Nursery, children will share experiences of making choices and having a voice. Examples could be choosing favourite clothes, activities, places to live and pets they would want to keep and look after. They will need to work together to make things fair through sharing and caring for each other. With new children joining this term, the older children will buddy up and support the new comers to settle well in Nursery.
Following Little Wandle, Nursery children will focus on Nursery rhymes, stories and songs. These learning opportunities will support children's vocabulary and enable them to express themselves. Nursery children will also be orally blending words such as b-u-s, l-e-g and listening for initial sounds at the beginning of their names and their friends' names.

We will focus on community heroes and how important they are.
This term, children will continue with the core-text ,'You choose' for one more week focusing on jobs they would like to do when they grow up. Nursery children will then move on to the next core-text entitled 'Zog and the Flying Doctors' written by Julia Donaldson. The children will be learning about power and governance through the text ‘Zog and the flying doctors’. This is to encourage and develop an understanding of empathy and respect all people and how to promote change for the better. Children will be learning that not all superheroes wear capes through learning about our community heroes such as nurses, doctors, firefighters and police officers just to name a few. New vocabulary will also be introduced throughout the term.
Oc
Children will be using new vocabulary they have learnt linked to community heroes. Children will learn the meaning of the following vocabulary: 'heroes, occupations, community, emergency services and help'. Children will be encouraged to express themselves in full sentences. Children will revisit the skills needed to be a good listener and good talker. Nursery children will continue to be supported to use full sentences such as, 'When l grow up, I want to be..... during carpet sessions and independent role play.
Positional language: through songs such as, 'Where's the monkey and role play. Directional language: children will follow and give instructions to each other. They will also set up an obstacle course in the outdoor area.
Number problems: Children will use stories to solve number problems. They will also use big pictures to solve the number problems. Children will need to use their listening skills as they will need to pick up the numbers from the stories or pictures. They will be adding or subtracting items/ objects.
Sequencing: Children will begin to order different items according to where they should be. They will start by looking at their own day activities and then the school activities. Children will also explore the importance of sequencing or ordering of items or objects.
This half term in Nursery, children will share experiences of being in the Nursery and the importance of helping others especially when they have new children joining them. Children will take time to explore how best they can show caring through collaboration. Children will learn the importance of helping others through the different occupations they will learn about. Children will role play of act out the different jobs and also talk about their parents' jobs.
This term, Nursery children will be using their creative skills to choose the best materials for items to go into the doctor's bag. They will choose these based on their purpose. They will also be singing and dancing to different rhymes and songs linked to occupations. Children will also use junk modelling to create doctor's tools and different items from the story 'Zog and the flying doctors.'
Phonics
Following Little Wandle, Nursery children will focus on Nursery rhymes during Rhyme time, stories and songs. These learning opportunities will support children's vocabulary and enable them to express themselves. Nursery children will also be orally blending words such as b-u-s, l-e-g and listening for initial sounds at the beginning of their names and their friends' names. In small groups, children will be introduced to sounds using images and grapheme cards.

We will be focusing on the life cycles of a butterfly and a frog and healthy eating.
During this term, Nursery children will explore life cycles of a butterfly and a frog including learning about healthy eating through the theme of Sustainable development using the core-texts,' The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and Tadpole's Promise by Jeane Willis. Children will be able to retell the life cycles through the stories and role play.
This term, children will be using new vocabulary associated with their topic on life cycles using sequencing the stages and activities set up in provision. Children will also practice their vocabulary through songs that have repeating refrains that children can learn and join in during carpet sessions or independently. Children will also be encouraged to respond to questions using full sentences. They will also be using sentences stems such as I know..... I wonder....... I think.
Children in Nursery will be learning about repeating patterns on clothes, walls or animals. They will also learn about 2D shapes and where they can find real life 2D shapes. They will continue with 3D shapes and how to use the shapes for a purpose such as building towers or bridges. Children will also be able to explain the differences between 2D and 3D shapes. They will draw 2D shapes and create pictures on paper and build using 3D shapes.
This term, Nursery children will continue to learn about how to work collaboratively to be able to care for living things. They will revisit our values and share their knowledge. They will continue learning how to express their likes and dislikes. With support, children will learn to follow class routines and expectations, select and choose activities independently. For fine motor skills, children will use different writing instruments with others moving from tracing their names to writing on whiteboards.
This term, children will learn to understand that different materials can be used to create different marks, lines and shapes. They will explore painting, using fingers and other parts of their bodies as well as brushes and other tools. Nursery children will experiment with a range of painting equipment. explore different materials experiment with layering and gluing different materials build and play with materials. Children will also sing songs about life cycles.

This term in Nursery, children will continue with the on Sustainability development and use the core-text 'Oliver's Vegetables.' Oliver's Vegetable, links with growing own vegetables for healthy eating. The story encourages children to try different vegetables especially those they can grow on their own. Children will listen to the story, act it out and retell it. As Nursery children have learnt about what seeds need to grow, they will use this knowledge to grow root vegetables. Children will role play the story using their garden centre indoors and their patch in the outdoor area.
Using the core-text, 'Oliver's Vegetables,' children in Nursery will use the pictures to describe the vegetables that Oliver grew with hid grandpa. They will also share if they have grandparents and if they grow their own vegetables. Children will also practice their vocabulary through rhymes that have repeating refrains that children can learn and join in during carpet sessions or independently. Children will also be encouraged to respond to questions using full sentences. They will also be using sentences stems such as I know..... I think......
In Maths this term, children will be focusing on number as they begin to recognise numbers on paper, doors or when writing them down. They will also be learning about number problems, number stories and shapes. With number problems, children will be learning to add or take away using different objects to use. These number problems will be from easy stories that children can listen to and work out whether they need to add or take away. Towards the end of the term, children will revisit their learning on shapes.
This term, Nursery children will continue to learn about how to work collaboratively to be able to care for living things. They will revisit our values and share their knowledge. They will continue learning how to express their likes and dislikes. With support, children will learn to follow class routines and expectations, select and choose activities independently as they prepare for Reception in September. Children will be supported to really understand our values through their play and learning. Nursery team will support the children to be fully prepared for moving to the next group, making new friends and new people who will be supporting them.
Children in Nursery, will be creating their paper mache vegetables such as potatoes, carrots or beans. Children will be drawing, printing and creating a collage. Children will learn all these different skills to be able to create their end product. They will also be singing some songs related to healthy eating.
Nursery children will continue to use the outdoor area for their gross motor skills. Most of them can now ride the two wheeled bikes. For fine motor skills, children will use different writing instruments and tools to support their hand and eye co-ordination. Children will also be learning how to use scissors the correct way.
Children in Nursery will continue with well known rhymes and learn new rhymes to support their Phase 1 phonics which focuses on listening and oral blending skills. Children will play games such as, 'What's the time Mr Wolf? and 'What's in the box? Children in Nursery, will this term continue learning how to blend through games and rhymes. They will also learn about alliteration and rhyming words through rhymes such as 'Miss Polly had a dolly.' In these rhymes children can learn to respond to asked questions.
