During the autumn term, we will be exploring Identity and Diversity. The focus of the term is exploring our sense of identity.
This term's core-text is, 'It's Okay to be Different by Todd Parr. Reception will be exploring identity and diversity. The story focuses on how people are different, differences in the way they live and the differences in family numbers. Some families are big and some are small. Most families in our classes have come from different places. Children will use their family photos to talk about the differences. Children will get to understand why it is okay to be different. They will talk about their likes and dislikes.
Children in Reception will be using learnt vocabulary to speak in full sentences. They will start from talking about themselves before moving onto families and friends. Children will be encouraged to use learnt sentence stems such as, My name......, My family.....I am.... and I have..... Reception children, will also be learning how to respond to asked questions using full sentences. Children will be encouraged to ask each other questions about each other's families.
Children in Reception will be talking about identity and diversity. Children will learn to understand that it's okay to be different and have their own ideas. They will work and play cooperatively, taking turns and trying new activities. Reception children will learn about building positive relationships as they begin to work in small groups or in pairs as part of their learning. They will learn to take turns and share resources with their peers. The children will learn the importance of listening during carpet sessions.
Children in Reception will this term continue exploring using different materials including; sand, water, paint and model making with materials like. Using what we call, 'manipulative material' develops children's creativity but enables them to develop fine motor skills which begin their journey to become effective writers. Skills like, manipulating paper by scrunching, tearing, folding and rolling, using play dough to pull, pinch and shape, cutting tape and card help to support children's fine motor skills. This term we will be drawing and painting portraits of ourselves, our families and friends. We will be using musical instruments to come up with celebration songs.
Using Little Wandle, children in Reception will begin with Phase 2 for their phonics. Phase 2 phonics focuses on teaching the sounds of individual letters. Each week, the children will be learning the sound of a new set of letters. Children will hear and say sounds in words using phoneme frames.
Our curriculum includes developing the children's 'Understanding of the World. There will be opportunities to talk about themselves, their families, friends and experiences. We can recognise, appreciate and celebrate our similarities and differences. Exploring the new environment, representing and re-creating what they see and have experienced is an important part of this learning and can be developed in our small world and outdoor areas.

Mathematical concepts this term will develop children's understanding of Exploring and recognising different representations of 1, 2 , 3 and 5.
We will also explore more and less of a given number. Later in the term we will look at shapes with 1, 3 and 4 sides and finish with capacity, balance, maths and comparison.
We continue to develop our appreciation of good relationships this term, learning how to play cooperatively and take turns with each other. Children will start to engage in more focused learning ,where they will need to give focused attention to what the teacher says to respond appropriately. They will need to show an ability to follow instructions involving several ideas or actions.

In maths this half term, children will move onto exploring numbers beyond 5 (6, 7, 8) . They will explore their knowledge and understanding of weigh, capacity, finding doubles, odd and even numbers and comparing length and height. These will be explode through practical activities both indoors and outdoors. Children will be learning the mathematical vocabulary that they can use in and outside the school perimeters. They will continue to use their number skills through songs, actions and mark making on whiteboards and pens. Children will also use their number knowledge in their play.
We continue to build good and positive relationships this term, learning how to work collaboratively and listening to each other sharing our opinions. Children will start to engage in more focused learning ,where they will need to give focused attention to what the teacher and their peers are saying and respond appropriately. They will need to show an ability to follow instructions involving several ideas or actions. Children will be confident to try new activities and think positively about others,
In Expressive Art and Design, children will make links to stories read in Literacy by using different resources to create a collage of a bears face, make a house using junk modelling and make stick puppets of characters from the story. They will also use their creative skills to sketch and draw different settings from the stories. Children will continue to develop their gross motor skills by using different actions : cutting, sticking, painting, rolling, patting and building.
Using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds, Reception children will begin Phase 3 looking at these sounds: ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, er.

Number bonds will be introduced and children will revisit the learning they did on one less or more than a given number. Reception children will learn about doubling numbers up to 10 to be secure in numbers and number patterns. They should be able to use mathematical vocabulary i.e number bonds. Towards the end of the term, children will learn about 3D shapes and use these for a purpose e.g building.
Reception children will learn about building positive relationships as they begin to work in small groups or in pairs as part of their learning. They will learn to take turns and share resources with their peers. Children will be talking about their feelings as they come into school, during the day and at the end of the day. They will also be learning how to solve problems amicably and using kind words with each other.
In Expressive Art and Design, children will make links to our Core Text : 'HERE WE ARE' by using different resources to create a collage of different planets, make their own rockets using junk modelling, create the Solar System using pastels and make their own telescope. They will also use their creative skills to sketch and draw things they may see in space.
