Waste and climate change

Saving food:

What I know about the food that is wasted:

A person waste 70 kg of food every year. Each house pays €466 for the food that is thrown away and 11.3 billion is the money that is paid for food that is not eaten in the UK (one-third of the food is produced is thrown away).

15 million tonnes of CO2 is used to produce wasted food, and 20% of greenhouse gases is used in food production.

What I do to save food:

  1. I check what is already in the fridge and the cupboards.

  2. I plan the meals and make a shopping list before going to buy food.

  3. Furthermore, I always read the expiration dates correctly.

  4. I don't buy with my eyes.

  5. I keep notes of the food that my family throws away and try to see why.

Wasted food

As this picture shows, we can see the amount of food products that are not even open and wasted.

Foods that we do not ingest and (or) discard away generates methane as it decomposes. This factor helps to increase the effects of climate change, since it is five times more sensitive to heat than carbon dioxide and that accelerates the greenhouse effect.
