Yes they may be a graduate student!
All incoming exchange students are coded as UG juniors in Banner. However, many exchange students, especially those coming from Europe, are actually at the MA, and occasionally at the PhD level in their home country. European MA coursework is often equivalent to our 400 level courses. If exchange students ask to register for graduate level coursework and they have the necessary preparation, please do make every effort to help them register for their requested courses.
LAS International Programs has copies of their home institution transcripts
If you ever have questions about whether or not an exchange student has the necessary prerequisite coursework, please reach out to our staff. We can easily pull their home institution transcript and let you know what coursework they have already completed.
I've got an exchange student asking me questions about visas, health insurance, billing, extending their stay. Who do I send them to?
For any non-academic questions like these, please first send them to the Exchange Coordinator in LAS International Programs. Our staff serve as general advisors for exchange students and want to know what issues if any may be coming up for these students. When in doubt, send them to see us in 3070 Lincoln Hall or they can email us at las-studyabroad@illinois.edu.
