The Phase Transformations and Alloy Development Lab at IIT Jodhpur investigates fundamental and applied aspects of solid-state phase transformations in ferrous and non-ferrous alloy systems. Our work bridges thermodynamics, crystallography, and deformation mechanics to engineer microstructures with superior mechanical performance.
We specialise in bainitic and martensitic transformations, retained austenite stability under mechanical loading, and deformation-induced phase changes — with a strong focus on advanced rail steels, wear-resistant alloys, steels for hydrogen infrastructure, advanced high-strength structural/automotive steels, and lightweight steels.
Our experimental tool kit includes SEM/EBSD, TEM, X-ray diffraction, Dilatometry, Thermomechanical simulation, Ex-situ/In-situ mechanical property evalaution, complemented by CALPHAD thermodynamic modelling and Data-driven approches.

Research Profile
Dr. Sk Md Hasan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at IIT Jodhpur. His research is focused on the design and development of advanced steels for structural, railway, cryogenic, hydrogen infrastructure, and lightweight applications through a rigorous understanding of solid-state phase transformations, processing-structure-property correlations.
He specialises in carbide-free bainitic transformations, deformation-induced martensitic transformation, and retained austenite stability — with a unique combination of experimental characterisation (SEM/EBSD, in-situ synchrotron XRD) and CALPHAD-based computational alloy design. His work on rail steel tribology and bainitic microstructure engineering has been widely recognised, with publications in top international journals including Wear, Materials Science & Engineering A, Philosophical Magazine, Metallurgical & Materials Transactions A, Materialia, etc...
He has established international collaborations with KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, IIT Kharagpur, IIT BHU, IIT Roorkee and industry partners including DRDO and Tata Steel R&D.
