When does the program start and end?

It is scheduled for May 27 to July 30, 2023.


When is the application deadline? 

Priority consideration is given to applicants whose full applications is received by 5:00 PM Central time, Friday, March 3,  2023. Late applications will be considered only if there are vacancies. 


Am I eligible?

When do I know if I am accepted into the program?

Applications will be evaluated by a review committee and the applicants notified by mid-March. 


How much does the program cost?

There is no cost to students. Tuition, travel, and living expenses are provided by the sponsor, National Science Foundation.


What projects are available?

Projects are listed here.


Are projects assigned or can I select one?

You can select. We ask that in your application you include and rank your top three projects.  We do our best to accommodate your preference, and let you know. 


Can I propose an X-ray  related project that I am very interested in?

You can express your specific interest in the Essay part of your application.


What specifically will I be doing during the Summer REU Program?

You will acquire some basic background in X-ray sources, techniques, and applications, and participate in one of the research projects you selected working with graduates students and professors.


Where is Illinois Tech?

Is the 2023 summer program online or in-person?

We are planning for an in-person program unless the Covid-19 situation changes significantly.


Where do I stay in Chicago?

You will stay at Illinois Tech on-campus housing for the duration of your stay. You can also call 312-567-5075, or email housing@iit.edu.


Can I bring my spouse / partner / friend with me?

You can discuss that with student housing personnel,  at 312-567-5075, or housing@iit.edu.


Who arranges the travel?

You will make your travel plans, but up to $400 of your travel expenses will be reimbursed to you. 


Do I need health insurance?

You need to provide your own insurance (click here for more information)


Can I arrive earlier or stay longer than the 10-week program duration?

Student housing may be able to accommodate you. Please contact them at 312-567-5075, or housing@iit.edu.


Do I have to stay on campus if I have family in the area with whom I can stay?

No, but you will not receive a housing allowance. Furthermore, we strongly recommend that student participants stay on campus.
