When the world first crossed the threshold into the 21st century after an era of destructive wars, no one could fathom how the threats to global security would transform. And yet, the seeds of the current international dangers were sown in the 20th century.
Today, many countries are in the throes of harsh wars, both external and internal. Others suffer from the unimaginable rise of political violence and extremist terrorist groups, threatening their national stability and, sometimes, sovereignty. Nations also struggle with the regulation of an ungovernable new frontier, the Internet, and all the new, baffling threats it engenders.
But global security cannot be achieved without international cooperation, and perhaps even solidarity. This conference is organised in the hopes that these ideals of peace, justice, and much needed stability may be attained, if only during three days.
