So many questions pop into your head when you have decided to go abroad and are ready to embrace this experience. Studying far from home, in a country with a different culture and language can be scary, but what if you could talk with people who already had gone through that?
When I interviewed students who had studied abroad, I asked them what they would advise doing to someone who is about to live a similar experience, and these are the recommendations they gave:
“I would tell new students to try to join as many plans as they can on the days you are free”.
“I would tell them to not worry about anything because in the end everything turns up fine”.
"I would tell them to make sure that they are ready to embrace this experience because we sometimes want to rush into things and this is a difficult experience, even though you get a lot of benefits from it".
"I would advise them to try not to go with the other Spanish students, you will learn more English and about other cultures".
"I would advise new exchange students to look for native people, get out of your comfort zone, say yes to as many plans as you can, and not to engage in a romantic relationship".
“I would advise the new students to go with the mindset that you are going to be the one that will have to approach the other people, also make sure you value everything that you have while you are there so when it is time to come back you do not have any regrets”.
"Not to be afraid to speak English that is not perfect, because they will get better with time, and it is good to be corrected to improve".
"I would advise them to say yes to every plan, even if they are feeling lazy, or you are not sure if they are going to like it. Also, do not forget about next year when you return to school in Spain, especially with the subjects you take, but if you can also take one or two fun classes do it”.
"If they have any problem to tell their agencies, but most of all to enjoy the experience because it goes by fast”.
“I would say to a student that wants to study abroad that it is normal to be scared but to experiment, open yourself and travel as much as possible”.
“I would recommend people to sign up for a sport because it is the place where you really can make a lot of friends with a stronger bond".
"Be open to all the plans you are proposed to so you get to know more people and do not miss out on anything you would like to do. And have an open mind with the culture”.
“I would tell them to be patient in every way because at the beginning it can seem that you have no idea of what you are doing, but it all makes sense in the end".
