The IBO is very strict about what supervisors are and are not allowed to do. For example, the supervisor is not allowed to proofread the essay or correct any spellings or calculations.

This is a list of the things supervisors have to do:

• Undertake three mandatory reflection sessions with the student (a conversation in which the student is encouraged to reflect on the EE process so far. The final session is the viva voce, which is essentially a recorded interview with the student looking back over the entire process).

• Sign off the 500-word reflection which the students must complete for their RPF (Reflections on Progress Form) when their essay is finished.

• Provide supervisor comments on the RPF.

• Provide advice and guidance in the skills of undertaking research.

• Encourage and support the student throughout the EE process.

• Help the student to formulate a well-focused research question.

• Be familiar with the EE rules and assessment criteria.

• Monitor the student's progress.

• Read and comment on one draft of the extended essay. 

• Ensure the student submits the final version of the essay before the final reflection session (viva voce) takes place, and that no changes are made to it afterwards.

• Read the final version of the essay, confirm its authenticity and give a predicted grade (however, an external examiner will ultimately grade the essay).

El IBO es muy estricto sobre lo que los supervisores pueden y no pueden hacer. Por ejemplo, el supervisor no puede corregir la monografía ni corregir la ortografía o los cálculos.

Esta es una lista de las cosas que los supervisores tienen que hacer:

• Realizar tres sesiones de reflexión obligatorias con el estudiante (una conversación en la que se anima al estudiante a reflexionar sobre el proceso de la monografía hasta el momento. La sesión final es la defensa oral, que es esencialmente una entrevista grabada con el estudiante en la que se repasa todo el proceso).

• Firmar la reflexión de 500 palabras que los alumnos deben completar para su FRP (Formulario de Reflexiones sobre el Progreso) cuando terminen su ensayo.

• Proporcionar comentarios del supervisor sobre el FRP.

• Proporcionar asesoramiento y orientación sobre las habilidades necesarias para llevar a cabo una investigación.

• Animando y apoyando al alumno a lo largo de todo el proceso de la monografía.

• Ayudando al alumno a formular una pregunta de investigación bien enfocada.

• Familiarizándose con las normas y los criterios de evaluación de la monografía.

• Supervisar el progreso del alumno.

• Leer y comentar un borrador de la monografía. 

• Asegurarse de que el alumno presente la versión final de la monografía antes de que tenga lugar la sesión de reflexión final (viva voce) y de que no se realicen cambios posteriores.

• Leer la versión final de la monografía, confirmar su autenticidad y dar una calificación prevista (sin embargo, un examinador externo calificará finalmente la monografía).

Significant changes are being made to the EE for the next DP cohort (starting September 2025) onwards. These will affect the way the EE is graded, the approach to the RPPF, and how some subjects are organised. There is also a greater emphasis on inter-disciplinary subjects.

El IBO está introduciendo cambios significativos en la monografía para la próxima cohorte del PD (a partir de septiembre de 2025).
