Today's Activities!!
ICEBREAKER!!
It's time to break the ice!
"Two Truths and a Lie"
Here's how it works:
Each person thinks of two true statements about themselves and one lie.
They share all three statements with the group.
The rest of the team then tries to guess which statement is the lie.
Target Time 10 - 15 minutes!
Come on explorers! Let's see where everyone and everything is at Stamford College.
You will be given a handout with various departments / areas to locate within the college.
You must either take a photo of the department / area or create a TikTok style video once you have found these.
You must remember where each area is located! I will test you at the end of the day 😜
You will explore your digital skills and upload this to your google classroom later today.
Edit your Tik Tok Videos or Create a google slides presentation of your photos from yesterday's Tour. Upload these to google classroom and press hand in.
Written Task!!
You have 45 minutes to write a detailed piece of work making use of the full time.
You can include the following points:
Why you want to do this course.
What you know about the EYFS and areas of development
Where you see yourself in 5 years time
What steps you might take to get there
What this means to you
Your motivation behind it
This is an assessment task. Please make sure you use the correct SPAG throughout this task. I would like to see the use of Titles, sub headings and a name at the top of your document.
"Getting to know you Bingo"
How to play people bingo
You will each be given a bingo cards: Examples might include "Has traveled to Japan," "Can play an instrument," or "Has a pet".
Explain the rules: You will need your bingo card and a pen for this task. Explain that the goal is to mingle and find people who match the descriptions on the card. When someone finds a match, they write the person's name in the corresponding square.
Start mingling: You will need to move around the classroom and ask questions to find people who match the squares on your cards.
Achieve bingo: The first person to complete a line (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) shouts "Bingo!" and wins. After this we will continue playing for more winners or even a "blackout" where all squares are filled.
Wrap up and reflect: Once a winner is declared, we will engage in a group discussion, sharing interesting discoveries and reinforcing the bonds created through the game.

Curriculum Intent
To provide a broad and deep understanding of the sector: The curriculum focuses on giving students a comprehensive overview of the education and early years sectors, covering the learning and development of children and young people from birth to 19 years old. This includes a theoretical foundation in topics like child development, safeguarding, behavior management, and reflective practice.
To develop practical, hands-on skills: A major part of the curriculum intent is to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application. The 750-hour industry placement is central to this, allowing students to apply their knowledge and develop the practical competencies needed for their chosen occupational specialism (Early Years Educator or Assisting Teaching).
To foster professional behaviours: The qualification aims to cultivate the attitudes, values, and ethical principles essential for working with children and young people. This includes professionalism, effective communication, teamwork, and an understanding of the legal and ethical responsibilities of an educator or teaching assistant.
To provide multiple progression pathways: The curriculum is designed to prepare students for various post-T Level options. This includes direct entry into skilled employment, progression to a higher-level apprenticeship, or entry to higher education (university) for degrees such as primary teaching, social work, or psychology. The T Level is equivalent to 3 A-Levels, making it a strong academic and vocational choice.
💼 Skilled Employment
Early Years Educator: This role is for those who choose the Early Years Educator specialism and allows them to work with children from birth to five years old.
Teaching Assistant: With the Assisting Teaching specialism, students can work in primary, secondary, or special schools to support teachers and assist with classroom activities.
Learning Support Assistant: A similar role to a teaching assistant, often focused on providing one-to-one or small-group support to students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
Nursery Practitioner/Assistant: Working in a nursery setting to provide day-to-day care and educational activities for young children.
Childminder: The programme provides a strong foundation for those who wish to become self-employed and care for children in a home-based setting.
🎓 Higher Education
Primary Education: Many students progress to a degree in Primary Education to become a qualified primary school teacher.
Early Childhood Studies: This degree focuses on the development and education of young children.
Education Studies: A broader degree that explores different aspects of education, including policy, psychology, and sociology.
Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND): A degree that prepares students to work with and support individuals with diverse learning needs.
Social Work: The knowledge of child development, safeguarding, and working with families provides a solid base for a social work degree.
📈 Higher-Level Apprenticeships
Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA): This apprenticeship allows individuals to take on more responsibility in a school setting, including leading classes under the direction of a teacher.
Degree Apprenticeship in Teaching: A pathway to becoming a qualified teacher that combines on-the-job training in a school with university-level study.
Getting "Classroom / Course Ready" & Why It Matters!
Kit / Uniform / Expectations / Placement
As we kick off the term, let's talk about being "classroom ready." These aren't just rules; they're habits that will set you up for success, both here at college and when you move into the world of work, especially with children.
For every single lesson, make sure you've got:
A4 Lever arch file
Pens and pencils
Paper (A4 lined notepad)
Set of 10 dividers
A calculator (to support with the mathematics element of your course)
A folder with any print-outs your lecturers give you.
And speaking of print-outs, let's keep all your papers clean and neat, not crumpled or "tattie" (as we say!). Keeping your materials organized helps you stay organised in your head too.
Suitable IT technology to allow digital work (if you do not wish to use the college Chromebooks).
You will also need access to a device for home learning (tablet, desktop, laptop etc.). Let us know as soon as possible if you do not own or have access to a device as this will impact your abilities to keep up with your studies, support may be available to help you with this, speak to Leah or Amy regarding this.
This is a big one, and it's all about preparing you for professional settings, particularly when working with children where phones aren't allowed on you during work hours for safeguarding reasons.
When you walk into any classroom:
Your phone goes straight into your allocated pocket.
You'll be given a specific pocket number soon once groups are allocated. You will use the same pocket number regardless of which classroom you are in. Until then, any pocket works!
Don't wait for your lecturer to ask you. This is about showing that you're independent and ready for professional expectations. Do not waste teaching time, we want to treat you as adults, not children.
Think of it this way: getting used to 1 hour and 30 minutes of focused, phone-free time in class will genuinely help you adapt to settings where boundaries are strict. In the real world, not following these boundaries can have serious consequences.
Phone refusal in pocket - This isn't about being told off; it's about being ready for your future. If you keep your phone out, you're not just breaking a class rule—you're signaling that you're not prepared for the professional world you're training for. "Professionalism begins now."
We know sometimes you've gotta go, but please try to use the breaks for toileting. Popping out during lessons impacts your learning time and can disrupt the class flow. Of course, emergencies happen, but if we start seeing a pattern, we might need to have a quick chat about it to ensure you're getting the most out of your lessons.
Your lecturer is the only staff member who will authorize you going out of class - not the LSA's, please see the leaflet to the right regarding toileting.
Got any questions about any of this? Feel free to ask me.
You're all heading into really important jobs working with children, and that means how you act now matters. You need to follow the college's Code of Conduct policy – always.
You might see students from other courses doing different things, but remember, your path is unique. You're training for a professional environment where keeping children safe is super important. This means:
Make smart choices, every time. Don't just follow what others are doing if it's not professional.
No sitting on the corridor floors. Let's keep the college looking good and easy for everyone to get around.
Line up quietly and straight outside classrooms. It just makes things smoother and more organised before class.
Act in a way that makes everyone feel welcome and included. How you act affects everyone around you.
We expect you to do these things all the time, no matter who's teaching your lesson. Being consistent is a huge part of becoming a true pro
Health and Safety in your area
Follow College Policies and Procedures: Adhere to all health and safety policies and rules, including attending required inductions and training sessions. This also means complying with rules on smoking, drug and alcohol use, and fire safety.
Use Equipment Safely: Only use machinery and equipment you have been trained on. If you are unsure, ask a member of staff for help. Always use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as safety goggles, gloves, or lab coats, when required.
Maintain a Safe Environment: Keep your workspaces tidy and free of obstructions. Do not leave bags in walkways and ensure aisles and corridors are clear. This includes the example of standing in a line outside classrooms instead of sitting on the floor to prevent trip hazards.
Report Hazards and Accidents: Immediately report any potential hazards, such as spills, broken equipment, or faulty wiring, to a staff member. All accidents, incidents, and even "near misses" must be reported and recorded.
Follow Emergency Procedures: Know the location of fire exits, fire extinguishers, and assembly points. When a fire alarm sounds, evacuate the building immediately and calmly without stopping to collect personal belongings.
Behave Responsibly: Avoid any behavior that could endanger yourself or others, such as running in corridors or engaging in horseplay.
Adhere to Personal Safety Rules: Follow any rules related to personal safety, such as wearing appropriate clothing for practical sessions (e.g., tying back long hair, wearing closed-toe shoes) and not wearing jewelry.
Respect Classroom Rules: Follow specific rules for different areas, such as the rule of no eating or drinking in classrooms to prevent spills and damage to equipment. This also helps with pest control.
Since you'll be working with children, you'll need to obtain a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. The college will cover the initial cost of this. However, if you lose your DBS certificate, you'll be responsible for the cost of a replacement.
As you'll be on different placements over two years, you're all required to register for the DBS Update Service, which costs £16 per year. This keeps your DBS certificate current.
Your placement work coach is Vix Williams. Please keep in regular contact with her to ensure you meet all deadlines. Vix will also be posting information and requesting responses on your Google Classroom, so please engage and respond there regularly.
Here's an important update regarding your upcoming placements:

Just a friendly reminder about two super important things for your placements: clean uniforms and good personal hygiene.
Your Uniform: A clean uniform each day isn't just about looking smart; it's crucial for keeping the little ones safe from germs. Please make sure your uniform is washed and ready for every placement day. To purchase your uniform head over to the Stamford college website - Induction - childcare - uniform & Kit for more information. Uniforms are mandatory. You will need to wear your uniform with black trousers / leggings, please make sure that these are non-transparent with movement
Personal Hygiene: Equally important is personal hygiene. This means washing your hands thoroughly and often, keeping your nails clean and short, and tying back long hair. These simple practices protect the children and show your professionalism.
These tips are just to help you shine even brighter as early years practitioners! Any questions, just ask equally these are questions you may want to ask at your placement interview as every settings policy varies slightly!
You should have all viewed this on the college website and have completed the summer project.
If you have not completed this, you have until end of day Thursday the 11th of September to get this into me.
This is to show your ability of independent learning and commitment to the course and to meeting deadlines and can be used throughout the academic year for your studies.
All work must be your own!
Anyone who has complete this please upload this to your google classroom and press hand in.
Steps to success
Over the coming few weeks / months we will be making sure you are on the right course. If we feel the course is not suitable or students are not showing commitment we will discuss a different level or course for you.
In order to establish this, we will be looking at:
Completion of induction task
Attendance
Behaviour
DBS / Placement
Work suitable to level of course/hand written assessment
Ability to meet deadlines
These will be reviewed with you with your course coordinator during progress reviews.
Time Tables
Timetables
Is available on your google classroom
Although currently you have two self-study days, you will be expected to be out on placement on these days a week after October half term. I would encourage you to use these two days to source a placement, email settings and to comply with Vix to complete the steps for DBS to allow you to start on time as you have 750 (EYE) / 315 (AT) mandatory hours to complete!
Remember, this is a full time course which you have signed up for and therefore, we expect you to arrange your appointments around your college days. If you do have a part time job, we expect you to move these days around so it does not impact your studies.
We would recommend that you work only a few hours a week on the weekend if needs must so you have time (& energy) to focus on your education. Your studies come first, this is your qualification although I can guide and support you, the work must be done by you.
That's a Wrap!!
