We know you can't wait to get started with your course so we have planned a little project for you to begin with over the summer. We have tried to include some fun activities, to get you thinking about how children develop, how friendships form and some special educational needs that children may have.
You can complete these activities on paper or on a computer / device.
Please email your work to one of the team using the email addresses below. Your work must be named. If you complete your project on paper, please email clear photos of your work.

Create ONE of the following items:
1) Something that could be used as a display in a nursery / preschool setting. (think number line, emotion faces, letters of the alphabet, a poster about different weathers / days of the week etc)
2) A toy or a resource that could be either used by or made with children. (think yoghurt pot / rice shakers, puppets, playdough, potato stamps, pasta necklaces etc)
Take photos of your item - tell us what it is and how it would be used in a setting.
Watch this clip from ITV of children navigating their way across London.
As adults, it can be difficult to give children independence due to health and safety. One of the key areas of development in the Early Years is social development. This is also an essential area of development which prepares children for school.
Answer the following questions:
1) The producers had ensured that the children were safe at all times during the task. Can you identify 3 potential risks?
2) Independence is a key skill that children should learn. Describe how independence can prepare a child for starting school?
There are many different additional needs that you may come across when working with children.
For this task please research one additional need that a child may have and create an informative fact sheet about that need.
You might include:
Key facts/statistics of the additional need
How a child with the additional need can be supported in a school/nursery environment
Charities which could offer support to the parent/carer
Think about the presentation and layout of your fact sheet. You should include pictures and make it inviting to read!
Don't forget to email your completed project to one of the team
Remember ... you can complete these activities on paper or on a computer / device. Make sure your name is on everything! If you have worked on paper, please send us photos of each page of your work.
And we look forward to seeing you again in September!
