Compulsory Subjects MATHEMATICS

Maths is a fundamental part of life and underpins so many of the things we do and use in everyday life. As with English, a good Mathematics qualification is a necessity for many jobs and for entry to Higher Education courses.

CONTENT

All students study Mathematics until the end of Year 11 and will sit public examinations in the form of a GCSE at the end of the school year.

There will be two levels of entry for GCSE - Foundation and Higher. Students follow a 5-year scheme building on what they have learnt at primary school in a carefully sequenced scheme. The GCSE course content starts more specifically in Y9. Students have been following the same scheme of learning during Y7-9 to ensure all students are given every opportunity to excel, this continues as far as possible into Y10 and Y11. Decisions will be made when appropriate about which tier of entry is going to result in the highest grade for a student, but we try not to do this too early.

Foundation tier is based on grades 5 to 1 and the Higher tier covers work from a grade 4 up to the maximum grade 9.

EXAM: GCSE (Edexcel) 100% Examination

Pupils will sit three papers, 90 minutes each, one non-calculator and two calculator papers.
