27 giugno - 4 luglio 2026

OpenTupa Course in Finland
June,27 - July, 4 2026
Seven teachers from various schools within the consortium had the opportunity to enjoy an immersive experience in Finnish nature—one of great pedagogical value—thanks to a course organized by the educational organization OpenTupa. Based in Karkkila—a town of approximately 9,000 inhabitants in the Uusimaa region, about 70 km from Helsinki—OpenTupa operates in a community whose urban layout was shaped by limestone mining and paper production.
Primary school teachers Beatrice Perkins, Madalina Duta, and Adriana Mazzetti (from IC Senigallia Sud Belardi), Ilia Pasquinelli (from IC Gandiglio in Fano), Silvia Torcoletti (from IC Giovanni Paolo II in Vallefoglia), and Lucia Marcantognini (from IC Ostra) were guided by the professionalism and kindness of Heli-Maija Heikkinen, OpenTupa’s training manager. They broadened their professional horizons through the "Human as a Part of Nature" course, which aimed to foster an understanding of the relationship between humans and the natural world. Learning to connect authentically with the natural elements around us helps us rediscover our own authenticity and the deeper meaning of our existence; it also highlights the importance of the balance between living beings for a peaceful coexistence that respects everyone's needs. Furthermore, taking a course abroad conducted entirely in English helps improve listening and speaking skills. Interacting with international colleagues offers a valuable opportunity to become more fluent in English conversation.
OpenTupa organized a program led by Finnish trainers that delved into various topics, while the final day was dedicated to a visit to the city of Helsinki.
Thanks to this course, the teachers gained many interesting ideas for future classroom activities and developed a greater awareness of the importance of environmental sustainability and the richness of the nature surrounding local communities. They also engaged in extensive English conversations with their colleagues Aline (from France) and Erika (from Hungary). All of this significantly broadened their horizons; the exchange of practices and ideas enriches any teacher participating in the Erasmus program.
It was wonderful not only to share the course sessions but also to enjoy social moments—such as picnics by the lake, herbal teas in the cottages accompanied by long chats, bike rides, and the journeys themselves. The teachers were staying in a small village in southern Finland that was not particularly easy to reach from Helsinki Airport. However, the Erasmus experience is also about learning to travel mindfully and manage one's own logistics; overall, this aspect was also "instructive" and made the experience even more meaningful!
