In collaboration with the SHS English area to celebrate the 2024 English Week Celebration with the theme,
“Voices for the Earth: Championing Climate Justice through Language and Literature”
"Desolate" aims to depict a world wherein we, as protectors of the environment, take a step too late. Like the dystopian setting of the artwork, the world may find itself in ruins if action isn't taken immediately.
“Last Breathe” portrays the final moments of Earth showing signs of life (represented by blooming flowers) before everything gets consumed by pollution and destroyed by climate change. The girl is seen embracing the remaining flowers before they die.
The youths' interest about society and its current state in the present have continually become more proactive about societal problems especially towards environmental problems. They become advocates and voices for those who are unable to speak up about the injustices they face such as the trees and the endangered animals. This work aims to help visualize that reality of young people advocating to their communities through simple actions that can later on spark bigger changes and plans in the community.
This artwork is supposed to show the presence of plastics in food. Improper plastic disposal has polluted our waters and has led to the destruction of aquatic habitats and the many deaths of sea animals due to them consuming these plastics thinking that it's food. This work puts into perspective the prevalence of microplastics through its presence in the animals we consume.
This art piece resembles how humans and ICAns, not only grow with, but also in nature itself. Every animal, flower, or leaf one passes by, they can see themselves blooming fluorescently more than ever when everyone takes good care of the environment.
“Resilience” captures a real-life personal experience in a chaotic blend of colors. The piece portrays Filipino residents taking water from a community pool due to the shortage caused by the widespread drought brought upon by the El Niño phenomenon. It emphasizes on the notion that the resourceful minds and proactive nature of humanity will always prevail in the face of adversity.
In a world overwhelmed by the suffering of the impoverished, this piece sheds light on the raw emotions and sensations felt by those who struggle to survive, portrayed as streaks of bright colors cutting through an endless “void”, something that symbolizes their perception of reality. World hunger, a consequence of widespread poverty, relentlessly weaves its way into societies, leaving people desperate for something to hold on to. In the real world, perhaps the glimmer of hope, the thing they can hold, or the helping hand that pulls them out of the “void” lies in us, as we have the power to feed their fates and transform their lives.
"Extinguish" is an illustration that portrays the fading voice of young Filipinos through the symbol of a burning candle. Like how the fire melts the candle, the constant pressure of outside parties to have it their way pushes out the thoughts and opinions of the youth.
"Knowledge is Power" illustrates how the power of staying informed strengthens our motivation to engage ourselves in social causes. With the lightbulb and book pages being the go-to symbols of enlightenment and knowledge, we can see the girl open her mind to the fiery, hazardous issues plaguing our society and set herself along the path to address them in this piece. The fire represents these issues while also serving as a catalyst that ignites our passion to participate in social activism. Awareness is a primary step to fostering a better future for our community.
This piece, entitled “Every Vote Counts,” depicts two ladies encouraging people, especially the youth, to fight for what’s right. It conveys the message that your voice matters and whatever the outcome is reflects on the people’s choice.
“The World is Yours” serves as a visual metaphor of our power as members of the youth to spark change in our society. The piece showcases a girl, representative of youth’s entirety, wrapping a ribbon around a scenery of skyscrapers. It highlights how we are the ones capable of redefining the future of our world and calls for us to take on that responsibility with wisdom.
