The users are affected in various ways due to excessive social media usage. Instead of just being a source of entertainment, social media is widely regarded as a sign of relief and an escape from stress. They spend more time than intended on these apps due to their addictive features (e.g., Instagram reels Snapchat streaks). (Cho et al., 2021) This negatively affects their productivity. Although a few users tried mindfulness practices, the apps failed to keep them engaged long enough for them to continue using them. Due to this, most users mentioned that they turned to using social media again despite their efforts to reduce their social media addiction.
I identified the following needs by interviewing users about their social media addiction and productivity habits.
Users need a platform that helps them keep their frequent visits to social media to a minimum by keeping them occupied and developing productive habits.(Monge Roffarello & De Russis, 2023)
The app should use the previously collected information from the user to suggest ways to plan their day for effective time utilization. (Gao, 2023)
Accountability is the key to consistency
Users should feel empowered by using the app because of benefits like stress relief and being mindful of any task they do
Self-exploration lessons to stay consistent and engaged with the app
Based on these findings from M2, I created three task flows for the users within the app. The flow includes initial paper sketches with the intended task flows that users can perform to achieve their goals.
