Dear Porter Families,
On behalf of our Horace W. Porter community, we would like to welcome you and your child to Kindergarten!
We are excited to have you and your child as a part of our learning community and look forward to working collaboratively with you as we focus on your child’s progress and growth during his/her time at Porter. Your active involvement and participation in school activities is encouraged and enthusiastically supported as our mutual goal is to work together to maximize your child’s learning. The information on this site will answer many questions you may have about Kindergarten as well as act as an on-going reference throughout the year. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to call us at (860) 228-9493.

Principal & Assistant Principal
Please do not hesitate to e-mail the teachers first with any questions or concerns about your student's behavior, academic, or social development. Each kindergarten teacher will have a classroom paraprofessional and she will introduce the paraprofessional to the class at the start of the year. Let’s work together to make the Kindergarten year a positive experience.
Who could have imagined that just a few short months ago we would be having a virtual Kindergarten Orientation? I wish I could see all your faces and share the excitement and trepidation of sending your student off to kindergarten. I’ve tried to keep this as short as possible and include only the most important information. The critical piece is getting me your child’s physical and immunizations so please read that section carefully.

Your student will participate in an integrated curriculum that is composed of daily activities that incorporate readiness skills, words and language, shared reading and writing, math concepts with manipulatives, science, social studies, dramatics, art, and music. Conflict resolution, respect for diversity and positive actions will continually be encouraged. Learning is guided through flexible, short periods of purposeful activities.
Morning Meeting - for shared reading, writing, math, science lessons, singing, dramatics, listening to stories, developing language through sharing, planning and evaluating.
Learning Club Time - for individual, small or whole group work which reinforces skills that have been taught.
Choice Time and Outdoor Play - for encouraging the development of interpersonal relationships, language, and motor skills. Play is children’s work. Teacher observation and interaction at this time can promote academic and social skills, reveal important clues to personality and individual development and improve language skills. Indoor choice time includes: library corner, writing area, creative arts/painting, dramatic play area, puppet theater, listening center, block area, science table, and games and puzzles.
Rest/Quiet Time- All kindergarten classes have daily rest/quiet time, which usually lasts 20 minutes. This is not nap time. This may change as the year progresses and children adjust to the full day schedule.
Individual and Classroom Jobs - for developing responsibility and a sense of cooperation in a group.
Snack Time - for fostering social interactions, independence and encouraging good nutritional choices, and for using math skills and strategies. Specifics will be shared at the beginning of the year.
Field Trips - for expanding learning and enhancing classroom studies. Families may be required to contribute to the cost.
Kindergarten is a full-time program in the town of Columbia. School hours are Monday through Friday 8:15am to 3:15pm. Children remain in the classroom throughout the day, except for specials (art, music, etc.), lunch, and recess. A typical week would include:
Recess once a day for 30 minutes
Lunch once a day for 30 minutes
Art once a week for 40 minutes
Library once a week for 40 minutes
Music once a week for 40 minutes
Physical Education twice a week for 40 minutes
