This week in Dosbarth Dewi Sant, we celebrated Shwmae Day, learning how to greet one another in Welsh and taking part in a range of fun activities that helped us appreciate and promote our wonderful language.
We have also been busy developing our writing skills and became authors by creating our own storybooks to share with others. As Dr. Seuss famously said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” This certainly inspired us as we planned, wrote and illustrated our stories.
In Maths, we have been learning how to estimate and measure length. Using non standard units, we practised our skills by measuring different objects and even measured each other to find out how tall we are!
We always look forward to hymn singing with Mrs Cerqua on a Friday. Although every song seems to be “her favourite”, our class favourite is Gather, Gather in the Light of His Name, which we can often be heard singing out on the yard.
In RE, we have been reflecting on God's wonderful creation and have written our own prayers and poems to thank Him for the beautiful world He has given us. We have also used technology to design digital posters about caring for our common home. We discussed how simple actions can make a big difference, including saving water, turning off lights when they are not needed, recycling, and caring for animals and the natural environment.
This week in Dosbarth Dewi Sant, we have been busy exploring our Healthy Me topic and learning all about how to look after our precious teeth. We have discussed the importance of brushing our teeth twice a day and enjoyed sorting foods into those that help keep our teeth healthy and those that should be enjoyed as occasional treats.
In Maths, we have been taking our learning outdoors, playing lots of fun games to help us begin adding numbers and objects within 10.
In Welsh, we have been learning to count and sing number songs, practising our Welsh colours, and learning how to ask and answer the question, “Faint ydy dy oed di?” (How old are you?).
We are incredibly proud of the children's wonderful progress in writing. Our Reception children have been developing their letter formation skills and are beginning to write CVC words independently. Meanwhile, our Year 1 children have been working hard to write sentences, remembering to use capital letters and full stops correctly.
What a busy week filled with fun, learning, and achievement! Da iawn, Dosbarth Dewi Sant! ⭐️📚🦷🌈
What a wonderful week of learning we have enjoyed in Dosbarth Dewi Sant!
We ended our week with a very special celebration for Grandparents' Day, welcoming our wonderful grandparents and special friends into school. It was a lovely opportunity to spend time together and celebrate the important role grandparents play in our lives. After all, grandparents really are one of life's greatest treasures!
In Literacy, we have been fantastic writers. Our Year 1 learners have been and writing their own recipes, carefully using adjectives, time connectives and imperative verbs to make their instructions clear and exciting. Reception are doing so well in learning all their set 1 sounds and beginning to form their letters. We have been so impressed with their growing confidence and creativity.
In Maths, we have been developing our estimating skills. We practised making sensible estimates and then checked our answers by counting within 20 and beyond. Why not challenge us at home and ask us to explain what estimation means and how we use it?
Our learners have also been full of energy in PE this week. Mr Ridge introduced us to a brand-new Toy Story game, which was an instant hit! We have enjoyed playing it so much that it has become a firm favourite out on the playground too.
During Forest School, we became nature detectives as we explored the different creatures that might live in our outdoor area. We focused on birds, discussing the different species we might find and listening carefully to their calls. We searched the trees and skies, discovering nests and feathers, and were lucky enough to spot some birds too! We also enjoyed exploring the forest school area further and taking part in games with our friends.
This week in Dosbarth Dewi Sant, we became mini bakers and filled our school corridors with the delicious aroma of freshly baked gingerbread! The children thoroughly enjoyed designing and decorating their own gingerbread men before writing a set of instructions explaining how to make them.
In mathematics, our classroom was transformed into an exciting Odd and Even Teddy Bear Picnic as we explored how to identify and sort odd and even numbers. The children showed great enthusiasm and confidence in their learning.
We were also delighted to join our Year 6 buddies for their first class assembly of the year. A special thank you to our buddies for the seeds they gifted us. We are looking forward to planting and nurturing them, helping them to grow just as our teachers help us to grow each day.
" I like singing the Welsh crocodile song!"
As part of our wellbeing and relationship work, we created a human friendship chain and shared all the wonderful reasons why our friends are special to us. It was lovely to hear the children's thoughtful and caring responses.
"I liked baking gingerbread men because they tasted like ginger."
"I liked having buddy because i get to play tag with my buddy."
In Welsh, we have been learning the question "Pwy wyt ti?" (Who are you?) and practising how to respond confidently using simple Welsh phrases. Our favourite game is the Welsh detective game.

On Thursday we enjoyed listening to Father Richard at mass as a whole school.
"I liked singing the hymn 'rise and shine, give God the glory glory' because of all the fun dances."
The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring Forest School, learning outdoors each day, and developing their skills through play-based learning experiences. Reception pupils have also been practising reading and writing their first names, while Year 1 pupils have been working hard to learn and spell their surnames independently.
"I love playing with the babies and kitchen in the home corner."
During our buddy time this week, the children collaborated to create artwork inspired by the style of Wassily Kandinsky, exploring colour, shape, and creativity.
"I loved dancing on the yard during Friday music day."
Thank you to all the families who attended our reading meeting this week. We greatly appreciate your support. Reading resources will be sent home with your child next week to support their learning journey.
We have had another wonderful week in Dosbarth Dewi Sant. Our week began with learning how to become storytellers as we retold the tale of The Gingerbread Man. We have also been developing our number skills by counting to 20 and beyond, as well as sequencing the events of the Creation Story.
The children thoroughly enjoyed their first Forest School session of the year, embracing outdoor learning and exploration. We finished the week on a high by working alongside our Year 6 buddies in the school garden. Together, we helped to make our school environment even brighter and more beautiful while building new friendships and teamwork skills.
We are incredibly proud of all the enthusiasm, effort and kindness that the children have shown throughout the week. Well done, Dosbarth Dewi Sant!
What a wonderful first week we have had in Dosbarth Dewi Sant! We could not be prouder of the children and how well they have settled into their new routines and school life. Bendigedig, bawb!
We began the week by exploring our new learning environment, both indoors and outdoors. The children have enjoyed getting to know their new friends and learning about each other's families. We have shared lots of stories together, including Our Class Family, which prompted some lovely discussions about how we are all part of one big, caring class family. Together, we made promises to look after one another, show kindness, and help everyone feel safe, loved, and valued.
