French and Spanish are among of the most important languages ​​in the world with over 500 million people speaking it as a mother tongue and over 250 million people learning it. Â
This means that French is the fifth largest language in the world according to many speakers. It is an official language in 32 countries and governments with representation on every continent. Several international organisations such as FIFA, The Olympic Committee and the United Nations use French as an official language and in their day-to-day work and documentation.
Spanish is the second largest language in the world, after Mandarin, with regards to number of native speakers. It is an official language in 21 countries and historical communities on every continent speak the language. Spanish is also an official language in several international organisations such as FIFA, the United Nations and INTERPOL.
In England, International Language is a compulsory GCSE subject and according to a case study by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) International Languages ​​are essential for Britain's future prosperity.

Although the languages ​​are different the structure of the course in terms of the skills developed and the assessment methods are exactly the same in both languages.
The course is divided into three main themes namely;
A language for leisure and well-being
Language for travel
A language for studying and working Â
All examinations/assessments are based on these three broad themes which are studied in the lessons. WJEC provides a vocabulary list for the GCSE course and only this vocabulary will come up in the exams.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to express themselves in a number of different "real world" situations such as ordering food in a coffee shop, explaining why they need to see a doctor and booking train tickets and much more.
In addition to this, pupils will study one piece of literature such as a short story or a film. The pupils will need to write a short 200 word piece about the work/themes and it will be held as coursework in the school.
The pupils will be able to practice the very important skill of translating into Welsh/English.
