The choices process

In year 10 you will see a change in your situation. So far you have studied a wide variety of subjects, but soon you will have the opportunity to study some of those subjects and drop others. There will also be an opportunity to follow new subjects.

What choices do I have?

Everyone has to study the following (core) subjects;

The curriculum in year 10 is designed so that each pupil has the right to choose three additional subjects to the core subjects. All the information you need for the optional subjects will be on this website.

How do I choose?

GCSE courses

GCSE courses are graded from A* to G. The exams will not only test your memory and your ability to present information but also your understanding, your practical skills and your ability to apply information.

The school has a wide menu of GCSE subjects. These subjects are mainly assessed through external examinations at the end of year 10 and 11.

A list of the subjects can be seen here by following the 'Courses' link above.

Vocational Courses (Level 1/2)

We also provide a range of vocational courses which place an emphasis on coursework rather than just formal exams. These courses are assessed through permanent coursework over the 2 years as well as an external examination which is usually taken at the end of year 10 or 11.

These courses are suitable for learners who enjoy the challenge of research work and creating a portfolio rather than just formal exams.

At the end of your period studying a vocational course you will receive a Level 2 qualification which is equivalent to GCSE. These courses are graded slightly differently to GCSE courses where you will receive;

If the pupil does not achieve a Level 2 Pass, then there will be an opportunity to gain a Level 1 Pass which is equivalent to a GCSE grade E.

In most cases, a Level 1/2 course is a Vocational course that prepares you for the world of work. Very few Vocational courses have an examination component.

A list of these subjects can be seen below and for more information follow the 'Courses' link above;

Entry Level

Some courses will be available at entry level depending on availability and the pupil's ability.
