The English Language and Literature GCSE qualification is a combined qualification that supports learners to:
Appreciate how language connects us to the world around us through engagement with the spoken word and written texts from a range of times, places and cultures.
Read and listen to a range of spoken and written texts, considering how language, register and style convey meaning.
Understand the significance of purpose, audience, medium and context when communicating, expressing, understanding and responding to language.
Express themselves in speaking and writing through clear, accurate, fluent and creative use of English.
Develop and apply knowledge and understanding of the vocabulary, grammar and uses of the English language.
GCSE English Language and Literature is a unitised, un-tiered qualification;
To achieve the Single Award, pre-16 candidates must sit Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3 and 4a.
To achieve the Double Award, pre-16 candidates must sit Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3, Unit 4b, Unit 5 and Unit 6.
Unit 1 – Context and meaning (Single 30% / Double 15%) Examination
Section A: Questions requiring objective responses, short and restricted responses based on one poem from the WJEC Anthology and one unseen poem.
Section B: Extended response question (one from a choice of two) – creative literary or non-fiction writing.
Unit 2 – Belonging (Single 20% / Double 10%) NEA
Task 1: Written essay on the theme of belonging based on study of a prose text. Learners will use a range of linguistic and literary approaches to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the whole text.
Task 2: An individually researched oral presentation linked to their understanding of Belonging for Task 1. The presentation should be linked to a theme, issue, representation or relationship that interests them from the studied prose text.
Unit 3 – Influence and power (Single 20% / Double 10%) NEA
Task 1 : Questions requiring objective responses, short and restricted responses based on one poem from the WJEC Anthology and one unseen poem in a group discussion.
Task 2 : Extended response question (one from a choice of two) – creative literary or non-fiction writing.
Unit 4a/4b - Motivations (Single 4a 30% / Double 4b 20%) Examination
Section A: Cwestiynau sy'n gofyn am ymatebion gwrthrychol, ymatebion byr ac estynedig yn seiliedig ar y testun a ddewiswyd i'w astudio. Questions requiring objective responses, short and extended responses based on the text selected for study.
Section B: Cwestiwn ymateb estynedig (un o ddewis o ddau), ysgrifennu llenyddol creadigol. Extended response question (one from a choice of two), creative literary writing.
Uned 5 / Unit 5 – Continuity and change – Shakespeare and discussion (Double 20%) ADY / NEA
Tasg 1: Ymateb estynedig yn seiliedig ar astudiaeth o ddrama gyfan gan Shakespeare. Extended response based on the study of a whole play by Shakespeare.
Tasg 2: Trafodaeth mewn parau yn seiliedig ar astudiaeth o un gerdd 1600-1900 o Flodeugerdd CBAC ac o leiaf un gerdd arall yn gysylltiedig â thema benodol. Paired discussion based on the study of one 1600-1900 poem from the WJEC Anthology and at least one more poem linked by a designated theme.
Uned 6 / Unit 6 – Connections written examination (Double 25%) Arholiad / Examination
Adran A: cwestiynau sy'n gofyn am ymatebion gwrthrychol, ymatebion byr ac estynedig yn seiliedig ar ddau destun o flodeugerdd ffeithiol CBAC ac un testun nas gwelwyd. Questions requiring objective responses, short and extended responses based on two texts from the WJEC non-fiction anthology and one unseen text.
Adran B: Cwestiwn ymateb estynedig (dewis un o ddau), ysgrifennu ffeithiol. Extended response question (choice of one from two), non-fiction writing.
