The Welsh Language and Literature GCSE qualification is a combined qualification that supports learners to:
Understand how language helps us connect with the world by listening to, watching, and reading different types of texts.
Read, watch, and listen to a variety of texts, considering how words, style, and tone convey meaning.
Know why, to whom, where, and when language is used when communicating and responding.
Speak and write in Welsh clearly, accurately, fluently, and creatively.
Learn and correctly use Welsh vocabulary, grammar, and language rules.
This is a unit-based, non-tiered qualification.
To achieve the Single Grade qualification, learners must complete Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3, and Unit 4a.
To achieve the Double Grade qualification, learners must complete Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3, Unit 4b, Unit 5, and Unit 6.
Unit 1 Narrative
Learners will study a novel and answer exam questions that will require them to: appreciate the content, themes, plot, and character development; identify and appreciate the author's style; present a personal and creative response to the novel; and write clearly and coherently.
Unit 2 Identity
Learners will study a film and be assessed orally in groups of three. In the assessment, learners will need to: appreciate the content, themes, plot, and character development; identify and appreciate film techniques and dialogue; and develop speaking skills
Unit 3 Perspectives
Learners will prepare two tasks, which will be internally assessed, based on poetry. They will be required to write an essay comparing three poems within a specific theme set by the WJEC. Learners will also need to prepare an individual oral presentation, providing information on a topic within the same theme.
Unit 4a/4b Linguistic Connections
Learners will sit a written exam focusing on reading, writing, and proper use of grammar.
Unit 5 Responding and Creating
The first task in this unit is a group discussion based on stimulus materials provided by the WJEC. Here, learners will develop their analytical and discussion skills. The second task in this unit will require learners to present a piece of creative writing inspired by the stimulus material from Task 1.
Unit 6 Conveying Meaning
This unit is a written exam where learners will be expected to analyze a short story. Learners will have studied three short stories in their lessons and will discuss one of the stories in the exam. They will also be expected to compare this story with another text
Unit 1 – Written examination (1 hour 30 minutes) 30% of the single grade qualification, 15% of the double qualification.
Unit 2 – Non-exam assessment. 15-minute group discussion 20% of the single grade qualification, 10% of the double qualification.
Unit 3 – Non-exam assessment. Written task under exam conditions (2 hours 30 minutes) and an individual oral task (5 minutes) 20% of the single grade qualification, 10% of the double qualification.
Unit 4a – Written examination (1 hour 30 minutes) 30% of the qualification (single only).
Unit 4b – Written examination (2 hours) 22.5% of the qualification (double only).
Unit 5 – Non-exam assessment. Task 1: Group discussion (10 minutes) Task 2: Creative writing (3 hours) 20% of the qualification (double only).
Unit 6 – Written examination (1 hour 30 minutes) 22.5% of the qualification (double only).
