Overview
Ten schools across the Eastern High Cluster of schools agreed to undertake a three week project across their respective schools. The title of the project was 'City of the Future'.
Planning & Organisation
The science and Technology Cluster Lead for 2021/22 was Mr D Guinee from Bryn Hafod Primary School. All of the Science and Technology leads from each of the schools within the cluster attended a series of online meetings to discuss the project in the Summer of 2021. The cluster lead set up a shared drive on Hwb so that all science and technology leads from the cluster schools could access shared planning, resources and guidance material. An action plan was drawn up based on discussions within the meetings and shared via the shared drive. This was then also shared with the Headteachers within the cluster. The science and technology leads agreed to undertake the project in the Autumn Term 2021. An agreed date of 25th November 2021 was earmarked as a day to celebrate the project and to share across our schools the work undertaken across the cluster. This website was created by the Cluster Lead as a tool to share and disseminate that information. It is also envisioned that the website will be shared more widely with the education community through CSCJES and HWB.
Weekly Themes & Organisation
Each of the weeks would have a main theme based on the Science & Technology AoLE as part of the New Curriculum.
The first week was based around 'Research and Planning Phase' - drawing on the skills taken from the 'What Matters Statements' of the New Curriculum. Children explored issues around sustainability as well as looking at modern homes and gathering ideas. The children then created designs regarding buildings of the future. Pupils had the opportunity to create final designs and make design decisions collaboratively with their peers. The main theme theme of this week was based around scientific understanding.
The second week was based around a 'Making Phase' - drawing on the skills taken from the 'What matters statements' of the new Curriculum. Pupils had the opportunity to use a range of skills and techniques to build a futuristic representation of a building from their local area. Pupils combined fundamental design and technology skills with scientific understanding of circuits and new ecological technologies such as solar panels. The main theme of this week was based around the use of design and technology skills.
The third and final week of the project was based around a presenting and evaluating phase. Pupils were given the opportunity to use their skills to create video, slideshow and oracy presentations to present information about their models. Pupils were given the opportunity to evaluate their final products and consider its effectiveness in relation to their original designs. The main theme of this week was based around the pupils' use of ICT skills and evaluative responses.
Each of the schools have uploaded photos / videos and information to a Showcase page which can be accessed by clicking the tab at the top of the page or by using the menu on the top left of your screen.
