What is a non-maintained setting?

Every local authority in Wales is required to offer all three and four-year-old children free part-time education in the term following their third birthday. Local authorities may offer these places in maintained schools and non-maintained nursery settings. A nursery class in a primary school, or a nursery school are examples of maintained nursery provision. Day nurseries and playgroups, who receive funding from the local authority to provide nursery education, are examples of non-maintained settings.

Where provision is delivered in non-maintained settings, funding is provided for a minimum of 10 hours per week for up to 38 weeks of the year, usually over five sessions per week. The local authority provides funding directly to the setting for each child taking up a funded place.
