We have created this site for the parents of current and prospective pupils to give you a snapshot of the provision offered at Canolfan Amanwy. We hope it is a useful guide for you and answers any questions you have.
Welcome to Canolfan Amanwy!
At Canolfan Amanwy our mission is a simple one -
To provide the best possible learning experiences and future life chances to every member of the Canolfan Amanwy family.
To enable our young people to develop and grow into well-rounded, independent and valued members of the community.
We are aware that no-one is more interested about what is happening for our children in school than parents and carers. We hope that the information contained here will give you a snapshot of who we are and what we offer your children.
Canolfan Amanwy is a Local Authority facility for learners with SLD, PMLD and additional diagnoses from year 7 to year 14. Learners at Canolfan Amanwy are placed through the local authority panel and have an Individual Development Plan (IDP). Our learners travel to the centre from across the county of Carmarthenshire. We are part of Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, a large 11 – 18 secondary school in Ammanford, which serves the town and surrounding communities. Some of our pupils benefit greatly from planned inclusion in the mainstream setting of a community school. We provide for a wide range of additional learning needs and as a specialist facility, we are well resourced to manage the day-to-day needs of learners with complex cognitive and physical needs. Our facilities include a sensory room, physio room, soft play, life skills room, overhead hoist system, hydrotherapy bath, level access throughout, outdoor play area, wheelchair accessible minibus.
We work closely with a range of services including physiotherapy, Speech and language therapy, occupational health, sensory impairment and specialist advisory teachers; we also have excellent links with Coleg Sir Gar and the careers advisory service.
We offer our pupils a curriculum that provides rich and purposeful learning experiences which allows for pupils to develop the skills they need for life, focussing on personal aspirations and preparing for independence.
We ensure that pupils have a sense of belonging within the whole school community and are valued and respected members of the school and wider community.
The well-being of our pupils is a priority, developing confidence, and empowering our pupils to make positive choices and is part of the fabric of what we do.
Our small numbers and high staff ratio mean we know our learners very well and through working closely with families, carers, and professionals we develop optimistic and relevant plans to enable individual pupils to achieve their future goals and outcomes.
At Canolfan Amanwy we keep the learner at the centre of our planning, ensuring that individuals are focussed on their own goals and outcomes, whilst being a valued member of our school community. By building a curriculum to support the aspirations and potential of our learners we enable them to plan and prepare for independence and to be a valued and contributing member of the community and enjoy a happy and fulfilling life.
At Canolfan Amanwy, we value the support we have from families, carers and friends and have created an ethos of openness and collaborative working. We offer a safe and caring environment where our learners are encouraged to engage in challenging, relevant learning experiences by highly trained and experienced staff, which prepare them for life and growing independence.
