Communication is key.
We believe that the key to success for our pupils is communication – by ensuring that each individual can develop their receptive and expressive communication skills they can begin to understand the world around them. We use a range of strategies to enable our pupils to become effective communicators; sign-along, visual timetables, PEC’s, SaLT programmes, Talkabout, Phonological Awareness, ChaTT, circle time, and assistive technology, to name some. We work on reading and writing skills, however for the majority of people - not just our pupils - spoken language, using our voice, communication books, symbols, or communication aids is the main method of having our thought, hopes, dreams and opinions heard – we want to give our pupils a voice and to be listened to and valued.
Pupil voice
Our pupils are encouraged to be involved in planning for their future, and give their thoughts, feelings and opinions about matters which involve them at Canolfan, school, community and national levels. We have Canolfan pupil representatives on the school council, and have represented the Canolfan on staff interview panels, including the Head teacher’s interview.
