Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! Any person in any extra curricular activity (including ANY sport) can also be involved in band. We work very hand-in-hand with all of the coaches and sponsors to make sure you are able to be equally involved in both activities.
The first part of your audition to be placed into one of the two bands at the NGC includes a progressive etude (meaning each line gets slightly harder). You will prepare and play as much as you feel comfortable playing. Below is a link to a drive with all audition music.

The second part of your audition will be scales. You will play as many as you know and feel comfortable on. Each scale will get you 1 point in your audition. The more points, the higher your score.
The auditions will be held March 5th, 6th, and 7th during school. Percussion Auditions will take place through drum club.
No! Luckily marching band and spring concert band are both encompassed by the "band" elective. Everyone will be in only one class period of band at the Ninth Grade Center. Band will count as your PE credit and Fine Arts Credit in one.
For us, academics always come first so we take many steps to ensure our students are successful in school. During marching season we give students one day a week in class for a study hall/homework time. This sets our students up for success and sets aside a time for them to catch up or work ahead in their classes. We are also working to create an internal tutoring system where many of our students sign up to tutor other band members for volunteer hours. Some may argue participation band is better academically for students, as our students must be eligible (70% in all classes or higher) to participate in competitions and performances.
It is very common that the most academically successful students at Hutto High School are in the band program. A good majority of our band students are in the top 10% of their class and frequently are awarded Valedictorian and Salutatorian Honors.
Many of our students participate in all advanced and AP classes alongside their band participation. Band should not effect grades in advanced or AP classes, but we do typically warn families that AP and advanced classes in high school are much more high intensity than at the middle school level and IN GENERAL taking many of these classes can cause a lot of stress, with or without band. We know that many of our students are very capable of taking on this challenge and encourage them to do so, but only if they are currently flourishing in that specific subject. If you have any questions on if AP or advanced classes are right for your student, please reach out to their counselor at the Ninth Grade Center.
No! No dance experience is required to audition for color guard. Mr. Monteiro teaches all basic skills from the ground up to ensure proper fundamentals for all students and to strengthen the fundamentals of those who may have previous dance experience. If guard is something you are seriously interested in, you are encouraged to participate in basic dance classes over the summer. If you have any questions or are in need of recommendations do not hesitate to reach out to Mr. Monteiro ( kevin.monteiro@huttoisd.net ).
