We kicked off the year with our Anti-Bias Antiracism (AB/AR) theme of Identity Awareness and Action. This year we honor one school a month though we know you are all putting AB/AR into action! This month's school shout out goes to Cherryland Elementary School!!! A special shout out to Ms. Lindahl who connected the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop to classroom instruction in ELA, Math, Science, & Social Studies! Click here to see some photos of how she and her students celebrate with a Hip Hop Showcase.
STUDENTS!!! Microaggressions are defined as the everyday, subtle, intentional — and oftentimes unintentional — interactions or behaviors that communicate some sort of bias toward historically marginalized groups. You've probabl witnessed this type of interaction before. Have you ever seen one addressed in ways that heal and repair the harm it caused?
Click here to watch a video about microaggressions and identity. Think about your background, experiences, and observations in and out of school and consider how to avoid repeating microaggressions and how to best respond when they occur. (Bonus: learn about microaggressions against Native Americans & how to be an ally since we are honoring Native and Indigenous heritage this month of November!)
ALSO!!! Come to the HUB Wed. 11/8 for a fun Native Heritage Themed Paint Night at 4:30pm!
Staff! Click here for a shared drive of some sample ideas and an Educator Resources connecting our theme to opportunities we can provide in our school communities for students, staff, and families around Identity Awareness and Action; resources curated by Newsela; and support to continue celebrating Native heritage Month! Also, our Voluntary AB/AR PD Series Launches this month! See more here.
HUSD Families/Community! We encourage you to watch this video with your child(ren) and share stories and advice on how best to avoid microaggression as well as helpful ways to address them. (Bonus: Help the youth in your life practice through role play how best to address microaggressions when they occur in ways that heal and repair damage between those experiencing them).
