Anti-bias and Anti-racism in HUSD is not just a professional development training, it is an approach to education in general

Here is another installment on how HUSD staff are engaging AB/AR work in our district...

Hubert Reed III

Detention Room Assistant/Reflection Room Attendant, Cesar Chavez Middle School

Mr. Reed is an HUSD AB/AR Skilled Facilitator

Ongoing Action : “Our AB/AR training has challenged my own implicit biases and I have had to think about what this means to apply this to my daily life and how I interact with my community.”

Next HUSD AB/AR PD Session Upcoming Minimum Days in March (22/23)

Mr. Reed has helped to shift thinking and labeling of a 'detention room' to facilitating a 'reflection room' for students

Vigilant Self-Awareness : Facilitating AB/AR PD has brought so much self-awareness for me and for my school and it has really helped me rethink how I approach my work with students who may get sent out of their classrooms. I am focusing on providing that social-emotional learning and support and helping students re-enter the classroom in ways that rebuild relationships.”

Mr. Reed will be one of our Student Leadership Antiracism Movement (SLAM) Program Advisors

Increasing Knowledge : By giving students an outlet like the SLAM Program we will be able to have our students learn AB/AR concepts and to be leaders of AB/AR. This will be so important for them to gain a skill set on how to communicate effectively when it comes to race, bias, and injustices."

WE ARE LOOKING FOR STUDENT PARTICIPANTS (Grades 5-12) SO PLEASE either share this program interest form link as the program starts next month, or email ccofield@husd.us for for information and to refer students and/or adult sponsors

Mr. Reed is a classified member of our forming Task Force for Racial Complaints

Holding Each Other Accountable : I joined this Task Force to think about and propose a new system to address racial complaints because I want to be an ally and to support my community. I believe we can provide a safe space where students, parents and staff who have felt like they have been discriminated against can come and get support and know the proper actions to take. "

A Shared Drive of resources pertaining to the Racial Complaint Task Force is available here

WE ARE SEEKING STUDENT AND PARENT PARTICIPANTS FOR THIS TASK FORCE - please email ccofield@husd.us to refer participants and/or to join!

Mr. Reed is a member of the Hayward Unified School District Equity in Action Pilot Program working with WestEd

Affirming Our Students: "The main thing is 'our students are the future' so it is crucial that they have a place where they can have a voice. We are supporting them to develop their skills as leaders. We are able to work along with them to dismantle systemic issues that have affected them. My experience with WestEd planning for the next RYSE UP event put on by AASAI has inspired and encouraged me so much. They helped us to really hone in on a solid plan of action. They discussed a concept called theory of improvement. It’s like the blueprint. It takes into account a complex system with many interconnected factors that must be attended to in order to achieve the desired outcomes. We may know what we want to accomplish but not how. I can take this concept and apply it to so many things. What steps does it take to make change? "

Here is a slide from one of our planning meetings on Bias- Based Beliefs

Acknowledging the Larger Context : "The larger context for me is to do what I can to bring awareness about race, racism, and bias, that many people of color are faced with. At times we may be aware of systematic racism but not do anything about it. It is important to me to actively work towards change and for a better future for our youth."

Mr. Reed is an advisor for the Cesar Chavez MS BSU and supports a new academic support program for students

Checking in With the Students and Families: "I am a BSU advisor at my site and we have both parent and student meetings. We are starting another program to help have additional check-ins for students who are struggling to get more 1-1 support. We help students set weekly goals and support them to reach them. It can be something simple like knowing how to email your teacher. I am noticing that students and families are so appreciative that we are taking these steps and they see that we actually care."
