Seismic Safe Building

In Science Class this week we made seismic safe buildings. We were trying to have our building withstand the shaking of a shake table that simulated an earthquake. To make my building I used four main strategies: tension ties, base isolators, sheer walls and securing furniture to the walls. In this challenge we use cardboard, hot glue, styrofoam, tape, and wooden sticks. My building stayed together through all stages of the earthquake, but my car came flying out of the roof. To make my design better I could make a more secure base and secure the car on the roof better.

Sphero Olympics

In March our science class competed in the "Sphero Olympics". Spheros are small robots shaped in a sphere controlled by using a blue tooth app on our class Ipads. In these competitions each member in our class was chosen for a different winter sport. We were to design outer wear for the robots to help them complete the event. My event was the four person bob sled. For this I created a small aerodynamic sled out of card board, plastic, felt, toothpicks and hot glue. I was very successful in the competitions and ended up winning the gold medal. Throughout this project I learned the importance of aerodynamics in engineering.
