"I wholeheartedly love my job. I feel a real sense of fulfillment of being part of a community that takes care of each other and looks out for each other. As a new member of staff at the Hundred of Hoo Academy, I was given a very warm welcome and accepted and appreciated by everyone. This mutual respect adds enormously to my job satisfaction. The other main part of my job satisfaction is helping support young people in their confidence and independence in learning. I feel privileged to share their learning experience and love caring and motivating them. I never knew it was possible to be this happy at work, but it’s true, the staff and pupils make me smile and laugh and there’s always cake in the staff room every day! My work colleagues have given me lots of support to improve my personal development and get the skills I need to be a competent teaching assistant.
As you walk around the school, it strikes me how consistently the children are reminded of courtesy and good manners, this makes me proud. The school leadership is deeply committed to provide a high education and promote well being to make it the most positive learning environment possible. My aim is to strongly follow the Academy’s ethos and values to continue the good work that is being done. This isn’t just a job for me; it’s a way of life and since I have joined I feel like my life has transformed. "
Juliette Irvine, Teaching Assistant for Science Department
I joined The Hundred of Hoo Academy as a Schools Direct trainee after 15 years working in the corporate sector and it was a fantastic place to complete my training. I was supported throughout both my training and NQT year with fabulous subject and professional mentors who offered expert guidance combined with a sense of humour and a caring attitude. I have an incredible department - we are more than a team, we are a family. We are constantly striving for the best from ourselves as well as the kids and we work together to ensure that we offer a varied and exciting curriculum that is fun to learn (and to teach!) Senior leadership at Hoo are great at spotting potential and gave me the opportunity to progress to a middle-leadership position within my first year, recognising the experience that I had gained outside of teaching. It is a great place to work if you are ambitious and are looking to fulfill your career potential.
Jennifer Plant, KS3 Lead for English
"Hoo is where I began my teaching career and, having taught at other schools, it is where I feel most supported and most challenged to be the best teacher that I can be. Having taught in other schools has given me an appreciation of the systems, structures and support that Hoo offers, which is why I chose to return. The other members of staff really are like one big family, looking out for each other, supporting each other and enabling personal and professional growth. As a school we are at the forefront of teaching theory, ensuring our students are being taught in an effective and meaningful manner. The students at Hoo are second to none. They really appreciate the work that staff put in to providing them with a first class education and really relish whole school events that make up the fabric of school life at Hoo. "

"I started at the Hundred of Hoo Academy as a PGCE student, my mentor took into consideration my beliefs and carefully matched me with an amazing class teacher who could help me become the teacher I wanted to be.
Senior staff asked about my interests and goals and have steered me towards them, believing in me and supporting me, they have provided me with an opportunity to fulfil a role that I feel passionately about.
I love working in the maths department, a team where the doors are always open, offering advice, providing guidance and sharing ideas. Ensuring that we are always developing our practice as we strive to always be better so we can provide the best chances for our students."
Keri Musson, Year 7 Maths Mastery Lead
"I started my Initial Teacher Training (ITT) at The Hundred of Hoo Academy, training through the Schools Direct scheme. The team at HOH fully supported me through my training year with a hands on approach to teaching. From the very beginning I was in front of a class of my own, I was provided with achievable targets every few lessons to help me improve my teaching practise. This has not stopped since. Even once I was awarded my Qualified Teachers Status (QTS), staff at HOH continued to provide high quality feedback to further improve my pedagogy. This approach has led to me becoming the great teacher I am currently.
Since achieving my QTS I have had the opportunity to deliver lessons across key stage 3, 4 and 5. I have focussed my career on those with SEND in the Science curriculum, supporting these pupils through my role as a SEN champion in the science department. To help me with this, I have undertaken lots of different SEN training, including an Assistant SENCo course through the Leigh Academies Trust (LAT).
This year, through our merger with LAT, all staff have received updated IT training though the Google Level 1 educator award. This has directly impacted my teaching for the better, allowing me to have a large impact on pupils attainment and engagement both in the classroom and with home learning. The Hundred of Hoo Academy really does have a staff-central approach, in which they invest in staff wellbeing and skills, this has helped to shape the teacher I am today."
