How Tiny House started, how it's going, and how we want to continue..
In 2017, Al Segura, an LSU AP at SCHS, saw a Facebook post where Veterans in St Louis were building Tiny Homes for homeless veterans. The next morning, he approached James Gaylord, SCHS' Architecture teacher at the time, and asked if he thought high school students could build houses for veterans as well. Together they called Missi Taylor, formerly a Bulldog but currently the Architecture teacher at Kingwood Park High School, who agreed it was certainly possible, and the two teachers felt comfortable that they could teach the material. Students from both campuses got the approval from Humble ISD administration, and proceeded to build their first houses with little funding and with many things still unknown.
Langetree- The home for all of our tiny homes. Completed houses from all participating schools go to a plot of land called Langetree where we have built pods of five house pads, creating little communities within the larger one. Mrs. Lange lives right next to these pods to maintain and care for our Veterans. In 2021, we began an annual tradition: taking gift baskets to the veterans living in our Tiny Home community. Students get to see the community, visit the veterans living there, and learn more about their struggles and successes.
Operation Finally Home: A national non-profit that first helped us get on our feet with funding. Operation Finally Home attended BHTH's first open house, and wanted to help fund our program. They now help fund all participating schools for more houses to come.
At Summer Creek High School, our Tiny House project has completed a total of five houses, and currently building our six. At Langetree, we have a total of 12 functional homes combined by all participating schools; ready for Veterans to live in. Kingwood Park, Kingwood High School, and Humble High school now actively participate in BHTH. In summer of 2023, Kingwood Park was on their fifth house, Summer Creek was on our fourth, and Kingwood & Humble were on their first.
On December 15, 2023, Mr. James Gaylord, the original teacher who helped start BHTH across Humble ISD, left Summer Creek High School. He accepted a job for Operation Finally Homes in Houston, a major supporter of BHTH, and now gets the honor of helping many veterans find bigger, less than tiny, forever homes!
In his place now is the new Mr. Isaac Martinez (microwave included)! Mr. Martinez is a former U.S. Navy Veteran, electrician, and U.S. History teacher at Woodcreek Middle School. He's works tirelessly to fill the shoes of Mr. G and be the best Architecture teacher and mentor he can be for his new students!
Don't fret though! If you pay close attention, can still see Mr. Gaylord tripping and pranking students in the halls of SCHS today!
