The Hudson High School Pool hosts a Lifeguard Class yearly for new prospective Lifeguards looking to join a fun and rewarding career path.
Classes are generally held on Sunday Mornings from 9am - 2pm.
The course taught is a Blended Learning Course which means that some of the coursework will need to be completed at home online while other skills will be taught in the water
New students interested in becoming a lifeguard must meet specific requirements in order to attend the lifeguard course. The requirements are listed below:
Minimum age of 15 (proof required).
Swim 550 yards continuously using front crawl or Breast Stroke
Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
Starting in the shallow water, Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10
feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with
the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water,
resurface and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool, exit the water without using a ladder
While these are the only written requirements in order to join the class, students are encouraged to have a proficient ability to swim (using the front crawl and breast stroke mainly), the ability to dive under water and hold their breath, and the body strength to drag a full grown adult in the water with and without the use of a rescue tube.
Students who successfully complete the prerequisite portion of the class will be provided with the following material to ensure successful completion of the course:
Pocket Mask
Lifeguard Hip Pack
Whistle
Student Lifeguard Manual
Satisfactory completion of the Lifeguard Course will result in the student receiving the following American Red Cross Certifications:
Waterfront Lifeguarding
First Aid, CPR/AED
Bloodborne Pathogen
