The major criteria for assessing students in an Orchestra program are: participation, preparation, and performance:
Participation is defined as attending all rehearsals, lessons and concerts.
Preparation is practicing music and completion of all assignments.
Performance is defined as the execution and presentation of music and concepts learned through the semester. This criterion is measured via performance recordings and in-class observations.
Grading Guidelines
Participation (12 points per rehearsal/lesson)
✓++ (100%) = Goes above and beyond with participation in class - warms up without being prompted and ready to demonstrate the skills learned in class enthusiastically, in addition to being fully engaged and participating positively to class
✓+ (95%) = Engaged and participates in class positively and comes prepared with instrument, shoulder rest, music, lesson book, and pencil
✓(88%) = Participates in lesson but is missing an item or is not participating to the best of their ability
✓- (80%) = Missing several items and participates minimally during class
0 points = Unexcused absence
Performance (30 points per assessment)
Six criteria split into two subgroups: Tone, Intonation, & Posture; then, Tempo & Rhythm, Dynamics, and Articulation
Each criteria is worth 5 points
Grades
Grades will be calculated by dividing the total points earned by the total points possible to be earned, and the resulting number will be converted into a letter grade using the grading scale A+ => F as outlined in the HMS Student/Parent Handbook.
All students are graded on their individual achievements and development, NOT on a comparative basis.
***These guidelines, along with the rules and guidelines of Hillsborough Middle School, will be enforced during all concert events, fundraising activities, and off-site performances and trips.***
