Welcome to Advanced Composition and Advanced Critical Writing!

This is a dual credit course taught in conjunction with Jefferson College. Students have the ability to earn high school credit as well as college credit for successfully completing this course.

Course Description and Level of Challenge:

Prerequisite- 3.0 GPA for dual enrollment credit

Juniors must have completed English IIA and IIB or American/British Novels. Seniors must have completed English IIIA and IIIB or American Literature/British Literature.

To avoid a situation where students attempt courses for which they are not adequately prepared, juniors enrolling in Advanced Composition must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 at the time of enrollment.

Advanced Composition is designed for college-bound students who want to develop academic writing skills. The emphasis of the course is on thesis development through expository writing. Students are responsible for a scholarly research paper. Students may take Advanced Composition for both high school and college credit. Students seeking college credit must pay fees appropriate for English 101 at Jefferson College.

Instructional Strategies: A variety of strategies will be used including the following: brainstorming, cooperative learning, demonstration, guided practice, inquiry, instructional technology, lecture, memorization, note-taking, presentation, problem-based learning, research, teacher questioning, and work-based learning.

Instructional Philosophy: The course and the classroom are organized in a manner to optimize learning utilizing procedures and routines. Students will be assessed on a regular basis according to the quality of their work as well as their participation. Depending on the unit, students will be working independently and/or as a member of a group.
