Scholarships and Contests

While this is not a complete list, it does give you a variety of places to start looking for scholarship and bursary opportunities.

The key to this process is seek, seek, seek, and apply, apply, apply!

Definitions

Awards - This term is used for awards that don't fit in the other categories. This could be contests or prizes from corporate sponsors.

Bursaries and Grants- Financial assistance based on need. Sometimes they also have academic requirements but the main purpose is to support students without the means to afford school otherwise. When applying, you may need to show why you need help and where your need is the greatest.

Loans - Loans are available through the provincial or federal government. Banks will also offer student loans or student lines of credit. This money needs to be repaid but when and how much interest you pay is determined by who provides it. You may have to share details of your academic and financial history when applying.

Scholarships - Financial assistance based on academic merit. Grades usually play a role in determining who receives this type of support. When applying, you usually have to provide a transcript.
